@yellowbird: hahahahaha. If it weren't your landlord, that'd be a great way to push out tenants you disliked. Our basement is pretty soundproof. I can't wait until DDs are old enough to get sent down there alone to be rambunctious!

@honeybear: great idea!! I'll start her in a spare pair of ballet shoes, otherwise I may order some cheap jazz shoes. Thanks!

@Cole: oh no - that stinks!! Our basement floors are sealed clear; very good to know. I was actually toying with the idea of painting a "track" where the girls roller skate, so this is great info on multiple levels!

@PinkElephant: our basement floors are cement and have a thick outdoor paint on them that comes right off with tap shoes...

You could get her some split sole jazz or even ballet shoes to practice in. They won't tap, but they'll let her slide a bit on the ball of her foot without wrecking the shoe (well, not quickly...) or your floor.

Or just get another pair of tap shoes and don't have the taps put on. We used to call the high heel version of those 'character shoes,' so if you tell the dance store that, they'll know what you want.

ETA: if the dance store doesn't pan out, try a place aimed at ballroom dancers. I didn't do that until I was an adult, but I know that some places teach children, and their shoes should be somewhat similar to a child's tap shoe without the taps.

@Foodnerd81: hehe...oops indeed! :)

@abbydabbydoodlebug: no idea WHAT would help the falling...there are a few girls in my dd's class who are always sliding all over the place. :)

I was more wondering if the cement basement floor would wreck the taps on her shoes. I was pretty sure that dancing on our tile (marble) floors in the entryway or the wood in the rest of the house was a pretty big no. :)

The only reason we're considering practicing at home is she just joined a dance class of girls who have been taking tap since September, and she's only ever done ballet. I figured that if she's interested in showing me her steps at home, it might give her the chance to get caught up a bit.

I took a chunk out of my mom's linoleum floor in high school... oops. I vote bare feet.

Well, my DD is only 2,almost 3 and we don't practice at all at home. If I ask her what her dance moves are for her song, she'll just show me what she remembers in her bare feet. We have tile thru the whole house so it makes me nervous that she'll slip and fall

If your child takes tap....do they practice at home? Where? I keep forgetting to ask the instructor what might be the best surface for DD to practice on (which won't wreck her shoes, but also won't damage the surface if she's not using her shoes entirely properly, since she's only 4.5 and very new to this).
