I don't think I have had a legit taquito. Maybe I have had, but the corn tortilla just didn't have a crunch to it and ended up being more doughy like a flour tortilla.

My husband loves empanadas and I love the cigar looking taquitos. You all have convinced me there is indeed a difference. I can not wait to feast on both.

They are all so different, IMO!

Flautas are flour tortilla wrapped, usually. They're big, too.

Taquitos are corn tortilla wrapped, I thought. Smaller/skinnier.

Empanadas have more of a breaded feel to them. They're a dough, they're thicker....yum. These are my favorite. I make them once in a very blue moon because they are a PITA

My guess is that the place that catered the wedding re-used all their ingredients, so everything kind of tasted the same.

Yeah, the empanada dough is less hard sometimes.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I've never had them with the same filling. I imagine that the proportion of filling to dough changes the flavour. I also find corn tortillas to have a very different flavour than pastry.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Well the type of "shell" is different in my experience so that is the different taste. Empanadas taste like fried pie dough to me. taquitos taste like tortilla chips or crunchy taco shell. flauta tastes like a chimi shell.

@Mae: @oliviaoblivia: @Mamasig: @mrsbookworm: @mamimami: even if the filling is the same you can taste a difference based on the shape?

I was at two weddings recently and one served roasted veg taquito and the other had vegetarian mini Empanada and they weren't distinguishable in flavor to me. Then again to me choc cupcakes and red velvet are interchangeable.

Taquitos and flautas are the same thing in my experience, both corn tortillas, filled, rolled and fried. In Mexico you don't hear much about taquitos unless people are speaking lovingly of tacos LOL. I think the name might be a tex mex thing.

Empanadas are much different and are present in the cuisines of many Latin countries. Here in Mexico they tend to be the shape of a half-circle. Fillings can be anything from cheese to meat to fish.

They definitely taste different to me. There are a lot of different type of empanadas from various South American countries. I really enjoy tasting the all the different fillings. I don't like making them though. I'm terrible at dough!

Flautas and taquitos are fried rolled tacos and Mexican.
Empanadas are filled pastries like a meat pie and are Spanish.
To me they are very different.

They are all pretty different IMO/experience. A taquito is usually a corn tortilla rolled with filling. A flauta is usually a flour tortilla rolled with filling. An empanada is usually a dough formed into a more compact shape (triangle or half moon) filled with whatever filling. They are all fried.

My preference is taquita or flauta, I feel like the empanada dough usually sucks up more oil and tends to feel heavier to me.

To me they pretty much taste the same. I have noticed taquito are served with a sweet jellied dipping sauce sometimes.

What's your preference? What differences have you noticed?
