There has been lots of research showing that when you use plastic (of any kind, but worse with credit) you spend more because you don't have to be quite as accountable to yourself in the moment. I also know that Target (and other stores) are trying to build brand loyalty with these cards, and I don't want to feel emotionally tied to a store just because of the 5% discount. </p> <p>I estimated how much I would save right now based on how much I currently spend at Target, and I am fairly certain that if I had a red card the amount I would convince myself i "could spend" there that wasn't planned for would more than make up for the 5% discount. Target is counting on that, or they wouldn't offer the card in the first place. Our budget is really tight, and I don't like to make things harder on myself than they need to be. Target is close to my house and we often go there on rainy or really cold days just to get out. I know I would be much more inclined to impulse buy if I saw a "deal" and I also had an additional discount, even if it wasn't something that I had planned to buy.
