@coacheswife123: I tested one before I pumped more to be sure I didn't have that lipase issue. I thaw in warm water :)

I had excess lipase but LO didn't seem to mind so I fed it to her anyway. I did a bunch of reading online when I started EPing and had heard of babies rejecting thawed milk so early on I froze a bag and then thawed it and it smelled soapy but LO drank it so I proceeded to freeze away. I used the Lansinoh bags and thawed them by running them under warm water, and also mixed with fresh milk. I never tasted my thawed milk.

He took the defrosted milk just fine! It tasted and smelled fine so I am hoping we are in the clear and I can really start building a stash

All these rules make me so nervous !

Not sure if it was mentioned in the KellyMom link, but our pedi recommends that you cool freshly expressed milk in the fridge, move to the regular freezer and once frozen move to deep freezer (0 to -4 deg) instead of directly to deep freezer after cooling. Her thoughts were that a deep freezer freezes quickly and may prevent the core of the milk container from freezing properly.

@coacheswife123: I would still offer it. Some babies don't mind the funny taste. Luckily mine didn't. Otherwise I would have had to scold my milk.

@MsMini: me too.

Mine will smell fine but tastes gross because I have excess lipase in my milk. Luckily my LO will still drink it.

@mrsjazz: Thanks for posting that! My breastfeeding class have me a magnet about storage guidelines, but I didn't know about cooling fresh milk before adding it to refrigerated milk - I've just been adding it! Oops. Anyone know why this recommendation? What is the concern/issue?

I've tasted mine and it was always fine. I had one bag that tasted very soapy, but I think it was more because of what I ate right before. Even if you discover your milk has excess lipase most LO's will drink it no problem at all so I would try not to stress too much about milk getting wasted (you can always donate as well if on the rare chance it is a problem for your LO).

Make sure to taste it. When mine went off in the freezer (excess lipase) it smelled fine but tasted nasty and S wouldn't drink it. I ended up having to dump the bulk of my stash down the drain :(

I mostly smell, but I've dunked my (clean) finger in occasionally to taste.

@coacheswife123: You can mix frozen milk and fresh milk but the fresh milk has to be cooled in the fridge first.

ETA: Print this out and post on your fridge! http://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/milkstorage/milkstorage/

I've been pumping a freezer bag a day for about a month. It just occurred to me I should prob taste one to make sure my milk freezes well. I don't want a freezer full of milk that LO can't or won't eat. Did you do a taste/smell test early on ? I've put a freezer bag in the fridge to defrost. So do I just taste it ? Give it to LO? It's a 2 oz bag and he is taking 3 oz. can I defrost it and give it to him in a bottle mixed with 1 oz freshly pumped milk ?? Do you have to defrost in fridge or can I just sit out a frozen bag or defrost it in warm water ??

I know nothing !!!
