I've heard it applied to not giving blood, but not breastfeeding! And giving blood is restricted only 12 months after getting a tattoo, and only in a handful of states. I wonder if that is where she got it?

@jessibear: The main concern with tattoos where you would have an epidural are if it is red, swollen or oozing liquid (Freshly done or infected). Otherwise, it's no biggie.

I feel like I've heard a connection between tattoos and not being able to get an epidural before. Obviously also incorrect, since my side tattoo was actually the topic of discussion while my epidural was being placed.

@Corduroy: We were taught in school that tattoo = hepatitis C risk. (Tattoos are way more socially acceptable than they were in the past decade, and good shops obviously do not have that same risk.) Maybe her doc was reciting old (perceived) dogma?

We were also taught that the ink gets swallowed by macrophages and trapped in sub dermal skin layers, which can shift over time. (Which is why tattoos on little old men are sometimes blurry.) But I've never heard of the ink circulating around!

@mrsjazz: my nipples are pierced & it was something I asked before I got them done. I was 19 when I had them done.

I don't have milk spraying everywhere, either.

The only concern I heard of is a friend who works in L&D said another mom had her pierced and wore d-rings. When her milk came in and she was engourged, her nipples swelled & they couldn't get the d-rings out. That makes sense since you need pliers anyway. And, it isn't safe to BF with piercings in because of the choking hazard.

I wore bars & unscrewed the balls before I delivered.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I think getting and having are different and of course it's good to ask questions especially for something permanent but I took it to mean that this woman didn't think it was safe to BF because she already had tattoos.

ETA: @Corduroy: and I were typing at the same time.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I would absolutely check the safety of getting a tattoo while breastfeeding just like certain dental procedures or taking medication. This woman was saying having an existing tattoo makes breastfeeding unsafe.

@Corduroy: If I were getting a tattoo, I would ask if it were safe for BFing. I think it's a good question to ask because you never know, I guess? But I also don't have any tattoos, so I would be asking knowing nothing about them and learning for the first time.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I've learned from years of interactions with this woman to just smile and say "is that so? Interesting" when she spews her knowledge. She's very sensitive about being under educated and will pick a fight if I challenge her facts.

@Anya: The reasoning is that the colors used in tattoos are not regulated by the FDA. These colors contain metals and toxins that float around in your body and transfer to your milk. So wrong.

Last night I was at a kid's birthday party and the topic of tattoos came up. One of the moms mentioned one of the reasons she didn't BF was because she had tattoos. Not in a crunchy, only the absolute best for my baby way but in a doctors forbid it way.

I had never heard that (misconception) before. This woman is ill informed on many topics but I had no idea people believed that.

For the record, every site I checked says getting a tattoo while BFing is fine. I couldn't even find a reputable site that mentioned just having a tattoo.

Have you heard warnings about tattoos and breastfeeding before? Wondering if this is a common belief.
