My mom gets it because she's a kindy teacher, she keeps current on all her vaccines because of this and if she weren't a kindy teacher and taking care of our son, I'd ask her to get them, yes.

@runsyellowlites: people don't think, even your nearest and dearest. I would worry about the incubation period. As I said we have had major outbreaks here so it is something that is on the radar big time. Vaccination levels are low so a lot of adults are at risk of catching/carrying it as they haven't had the booster and only have partial immunity. I know of 5 cases last winter -people I know.

@cupcakemama: I would really hope that someone wouldn't just write off their symptoms... re-vaccinated or not... especially since their vaccine only protects them from a full-blown case & not my little one.

We asked our families to get it ...and had some dramas that i think I will probably always remember.

Whooping cough outbreaks are a major problem here, mainly because there are areas with low vaccination rates. It is recommended for all parents and close family of newborns to have the shot. If you have ever seen video of a baby with whooping cough I doubt you would hesitate to get the shot. I was scared stiff of it until LO was old enough to have at least the first lot of shots.

@runsyellowlites: and hope that the symptoms show up before your LO is exposed or that the person with the "cold" doesn't dismiss it as not worth mentioning, just a tickle in the throat.

I had DH get it, but no one else in our family did. They did all get the flu vaccine though, since DS was born at the end of flu season. I don't think there was a pertussis outbreak in our area, though I know there were cases in other areas. Most of us are homebodies without a lot of exposure.

DH and I haven't gotten it because there really wasn't a need. I know there was a break out in CA a while back. We definitely would have gotten vaccinated and would have asked others to get vaccinated as well if they spent lots of time with our LO.

@Lozza: Oh I know that it protects those who are vaccinated against a full blown case, but in this case it's being used as a protective measure for an unprotected newborn... I'd rather not have an individual around with a "masked" or milder case around lo, but treat all individuals with a mild cold/symptoms as possible exposure to pertussis, since their mild case would NOT be a mild case in my lo (who has no protection against a full blown case).... even though we haven't had any outbreaks where I live.

@runsyellowlites: Cases of pertussis, when they occur in vaccinated individuals, are usually milder, but that doesn't mean the vaccine isn't protective against mild cases.

I got the TDAP vaccine very early in pregnancy (or maybe like 1 week before I conceived, I can’t remember exactly), and my husband will get vaccinated before LO arrives. We are also going to speak to our parents about getting it. The whopping cough outbreak isn’t just in IL, there were a whole batch of babies that died in CA due to whopping cough.

DH and I have both already gotten this vaccine. I asked both of my parents to get it as well, since they will be around the baby while she is very young. Initially my mom complained about it, but she decided to listen to me in the end.

No, but primarily because the pertussis vaccine doesn't protect against carrying the disease or a mild case. Many vaccinated adults can carry it or have mild outbreaks of it without ever noticing b/c of the way it protects only against full blown pertussis.

I'd much rather not have "masked" sickness around little one.. and if any one has any signs of a cold of any kind just refrain from contact.

I got it, my husband already has it, my mom has it, and my sister and her husband has it. I haven't asked anyone to get it but potentials are MIL, my brothers, and my SILs. I think one of my bros has it (he's in medicine) as does one of my SILs (works in a school). I may just have my husband ask MIL to get one.

My husband and I received the TDAP vaccine in January, right before our good friends had their baby. They had mentioned the vaccine in passing and my husband and I decided to go ahead and get it since we're hoping to add to our family as well. Some of our other friends thought it was crazy to ask friends to get the vaccines, but it's not like the parents-to-be were offering an ultimatum or anything - they just suggested it. The nurse at my doctor's office was sort of surprised we were getting the vaccine for a friend's baby, but also glad because it's getting more common to see whooping cough here. (I'm also in Illinois, btw)

We are in NC and it was mentioned at our very first appointment. I made my husband go get one right away and told our family they need to get one before the baby comes. The Dr was very concerned that whooping cough is making a comeback even though not in our state yet.

The doctors/nurses in my prenatal classes at the hospital have all recommended that any caregiver who will be in close contact with an infant should get the TDAP shot to protect the baby from pertussis (whooping cough) ... unless the adult has received the TDAP shot within the last five years. There is an outbreak of whooping cough in Illinois so maybe this is a recommendation that's specific to my region, but the CDC has recommended the same thing on their website.

I really don't want to turn this into a debate about vaccines, but has anyone asked their parents or other caregivers to get the TDAP shot?
