I came back to this post to add an update. After declining it at the last appointment I agonized over it for weeks but ended up getting the shot at my follow up appointment. My doctor agrees that the cdc study is not as conclusive as some of might think the shot doesnt provide actual full protection to newborns but can reduce the severity of pertussis if they do get exposed to it. Thanks to everyone for chiming in.

@Mrsbells: Good luck deciding. I can understand the confusion if it was never recommended to you before.

I was given the shot during my third trimester in both 2014 and 2017.

Thanks everyone. Currently discussing it with DH and he is equally unsure about it. Sigh.

@pachamama: it is scary! Especially after being told it was unsafe by doctors. But I guess times change.

@Mrsbells: I definitely understand your apprehension about the vaccine. I am also hesitant about the category C designation and unfortunately it stems from a distrust in medications during pregnancy that lack eliable, objective long term studies in the effect on the fetus. I recently had to make a decision to get injections here there is little research on long term effects but what I have decided is that it's a risk vs benefit thing. The risk of the vaccine is much less than the possibility of pertussis. So while we can never be 100% sure about anything while pregnant, I guess we just have the trust the benefit is worth it. Scary, I know, but I know if our kids got sick (in my case, if my son was preterm and I knew I could maybe have prevented it with medication) we would feel so guilty. I hope yhis helps xoxo (I feel like I should add I am strongly pro-vax but I totally get the apprehension!)

Got it during both pregnancies and would get it again.

Babies die from pertussis. I have taken care of babies with pertussis in the hospital and would not wish it on anyone.

Class C is a very grey area, and some meds in this category are routinely used during pregnancy. This is because doing studies on pregnant women is very hard to get past an IRB. That doesn't mean that the risks will outweight the benefits, and is important to discuss with your doctor.

Pertussis is a real problem in our country, particularly with so many more people not vaccinating. I live and work in one of those areas, and recommend anyone in contact with newborns, especially the pregnant moms, follow the guidelines and get their Tdap.

I do think it used to be different - they gave it to me at the hospital for a 2012 birth. For my 2015 and upcoming 2018 births I got it third trimester, but different practice too. I’m all for getting it when pertussis is having a comeback and I have two older kids to share germs with the baby! This time I had a strong reaction to the tetanus though which was no fun.

@erinbaderin: I immediately emailed DW who is 32 weeks to ask this! Our ob has not mentioned it, nor with our midwife for our son in 2014. From this link, looks like they do now recommend it but it still doesn’t seem to be common. We will be asking our ob at next visit.

Thanks everyone for your input. My post is not meant to judge or criticize anyone. I spoke to my doctor about it after I posted this thread since i was in the waiting room at the time and she actually agreed with me that whilst it is a cdc recommendation the manufacturers really have no idea what it does to the baby whilst in the uterus. The cdc studies focus on babies who did get the pertussis and look back to see how many of their moms had the shot. So its not the most conclusive study just yet.
@erinbaderin: similarly none of my europeans friends have been offered the shot during pregnancy. Possibly the whooping outbreak didnt affect you guys? I also think our healthcare system takes a more proactive approach to offering meds than other countries. @coopsmama: yes my OB said the same thing today. They have been told to recommend it but there is yet to be strong evidence.

I got it while pregnant. There was an outbreak at my brother's church when I was pregnant and the baby was due (there are a lot of anti-vax parents in that area)

Even though my brother and SIL changed churches for a while (She was pregnant and didn't want to be exposed) it was too close for me. They live next door to my mom, who I knew would be visiting, so I made sure my mom's was up to date and got mine before the baby was born.

@Mrsbells: Yes, spring 2012. I did some more research this morning and it looks like it wasn't a widespread recommendation until 2013 for women who hadn't previously received the vaccine. I think it's likely my doctor recommended it because I didn't remember if I'd had one in the last 10 years, which was the recommendation as of 2011.

I think the ACOG committee opinion has better information on the studies done on this topic along with reference links which are worth perusing for anyone interested. Including links to studies on safety to fetus... which are all retrospective data collection because you can't conduct randomized trials on something like this.

Also, for what it's worth, there is a recently completed trial of TDAP safety in pregnancy - obviously without random assignment - that has results forthcoming. https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02209623

@Mrsbells: that package insert is exactly what I’m saying - them saying they haven’t studied it doesn’t mean it causes harm or is ineffective. It literally means they didn’t test it in pregnant people (again because you can’t). Just like mfr will put an expiration date of 30 days because they didn’t test it any longer then that. It doesn’t mean it’s no good, they just can only put 30 days on the packaging. Adacel or boostrix are used all the time in pregnancy

It's your body and your baby so you can do what you want, but I'm not sure what study you are citing when you say the Tdap during pregnancy offers no benefit. There was a study by the CDC in 2017 that showed that Tdap during the third trimester of pregnancy prevented more than three out of four cases of wooping cough in babies younger than 2 months.

according to the CDC there is some protection afforded to your baby by getting the shot while pregnant. no, it does not fully protect them like their own dtap does at 8 weeks, but something is better than nothing when they're so small.

@Mrsbells: you do you. Just being class c doesn’t inherently mean something is risky for pregnancy. It can just mean there are no studies which are most meds because doing studies on pregnant people are unethical. Many many drugs that we use in pregnancy are category c and people use them every day
