@SeptMomma12: The caffeine content also depends on how long you steep it. I don't need a whole lot, so with black teas, including chai (which are safe during pregnancy), I just steep for the recommended time or less and am confident that I am well below the recommended daily dosage of caffeine.

Anecdote: One time I ordered an earl grey latte at Starbucks, and while the steeped tea was waiting for the milk to be steamed, it steeped like CRAZY and after like 5 minutes there was so much caffeine in it that it made me jittery.

@SeptMomma12: one other thing to consider. I've read that tea can inhibit good iron absorption. Many pregnant women suffer from anemia so tea could be bad in that case.

I definitely don't feel bad about drinking tea (Earl Grey) in the morning. Sometimes it's one cup, sometimes none. I know it's nowhere near the 200 mg of caffeine limit. I also never drink soft drinks, whether I'm pregnant or not. Please remember those when calculating your caffeine intake, including chocolate, and energy drinks.

My googling has told me that black tea has 45 mgs of caffeine in it. I have 1-2 cups every day and dont feel bad about it at all...I love my tea.

So tea has like..50% the caffeine in a cup of coffee. It takes approximately 4 cups to equal 2 cups of coffee. So i have my coffee and comfortably have one or two cups of tea when I feel up to it. I usually only want the one.

Caffiene is important, but there are also a lot of herbs to avoid while pregnant. Once I was into my 2nd trimester, I started drinking a pregnancy tea that I made myself. I went to an herb store (or you can find organic herbs online), and bought a 1/2 ounce each of: Red raspberry leaf, Oatstraw, Alfalfa, Nettles, and Dandelion Leaf. I mixed them all together, and bought a reusable tea strainer. I would just put a heaping tablespoon in to steep. It was soooo good.

You have to drink a lot of tea to go over the caffeine limit! I think I had at least two cups a day st work, because water from the coffee machine didn't taste so good by itself. It was fine, the tea didn't do any harm.

You are recommended 200mg each day. I like to think of coffee as 100mg and tea as 50mg so I used to try and stick to 1 coffee in the morning and two tea breaks at work.

I say this, however, honestly, all the other stuff you have to give up in pregnancy this didn't last past my 12 week scan, it's just a cup of tea, unless you are drinking it in buckets just enjoy it!

I drank black tea, including chai, during pregnancy. I'd usually have one large-ish cup a day but I would make it a little weaker and add lots of milk.

I think I read somewhere that green tea can inhibit absorption of folic acid and that hibiscus can trigger labor, so I avoided those.

I am not entirely sure I could function with no tea ( okay I am being dramatic but I grew up in a very English house and tea is a constant thing! ) I limit myself to one a day and avoid the herbal kinds for a simple breakfast or earl grey. My doctor said it is fine and she would rather see me having a tea per day then taking all kinds of Tylenol for the horrible headaches I get without it ( yes caffeine addiction right here ha ha!)

I drank tea (or coffee) anytime I wanted while pregnant, and drank the same kinds I always drank (black tea, some white tea, ginger tea, peppermint tea, etc.). Some days that meant having none, some days that meant having 2-3 cups.

You would have to drink a crapload of tea each day in order to max out your caffeine recommendation.

I drink tea each day. I chose a relatively low caffeine type. I'd have to drink 8 cups to meet the limit, which I never get close to. I brew a 3-cup pot each morning with just one bag (so each cup should be even lower in caffeine). I drink one cup hot in the morning then make the other two into ice tea later in the day. Works for me.

If I get tea at a restaurant, I try to be cautious with the amount since I don't know the caffeine level. But really, there's not much chance of going over the 200 mg limit with a couple of cups.

Before getting pregnant, I would have a strongly brewed tea in the morning and a Diet Coke or Iced Tea at lunch. While I was pregnant I tried to do one or the other, and if I brewed my own tea I would just make it weaker than I normally would. I figured I was far under the 200mg recommendation that way.

Looks like it has "31-45mg" caffeine, according to their website. But no information about what cup size that is. Though would the size even matter for tea? I assume that's just the caffeine in 1 bag, regardless of the cup size...maybe?

My understanding is that the biggest issue is caffeine. The current recommendation is 200mg or less daily.

I know some herbal teas are considered potentially less safe during pregnancy but they seem to be few and far between. I would Google them and have a conversation with your care provider but my guess is you will get the thumbs up.

I think it's all about the caffeine content, it doesn't really matter if it's tea of coffee. I would check to see how much caffeine is in your tea and if it is within the limit that you are comfortable with.

Tea drinkers, what did you do when you got pregnant? I normally have one cup (grande size) of the Tazo Organic Chai tea in the morning. I stopped completely when I got pregnant the first time, but I'm kinda dreading doing that this time with a toddler! I'm currently 4.5 weeks.

I've seen a lot of information about limiting yourself to one 12oz cup of coffee but can't seem to find much about tea.
