@Foodnerd81: we use the clear goody ones, they are really small, like the circumference of a time. I've not had trouble with them pulling hair out.

The second type of clip is great- K will yank them out and they've never pulled her hair. They're sturdy enough to stay in though (she has very fine hair). We also use the tiny elastics-they slide out and don't pull if you go slowly, but hold really well.

@Anagram: um, yeah, your baby has quite a bit more hair than my 2 year old. :) I'm thinking a hair and for the baby just for photo ops, since I assume she won't have enough hair for a clip for at least a year. Seriously at Cs first birthday she still had NO hair.

My situation is a bit different because my 2 year old has quite a bit of hair--actually so does the baby, but hers is very fine. She has been wearing h airbows since she was quite young, so now it goes without saying and she wears hair bands, bows, or head bands the whole day, even weekends.

We use both kinds of clips you posted, along with some no-slip clips I got on Amazon. Headbands are just for pictures.

my girl has a patch of super long hair in the middle of her haid that sticks up straight, so we put it in a teeny tiny elastic, sometimes with a bow. it stays pretty well! :)

Eta we use the elastics that are grippy and as long as you pull them out slowly they don't pull her hair.

The first kind you posted works way better than the second for my girls. The baby section at Target has a set of pony tail holders and elastic a that work well for my girls. The elastics work on my baby and the ponytails on my toddler who had more hair.

@oliviaoblivia: what kind of elastics? I feel like anything small or grippy enough will pull her hair out.

I just got the cutest matching baby headband and toddler hair clip from our own @katiekc: Her company is Lily Girl Designs. Affordable and she has lots of options! My favorite for R is her covered clips because they stay in and keep her hair back. https://m.facebook.com/lilygirldesigns/#!/lilygirldesigns/

@Foodnerd81: just that little bit of hair in an elastic will help secure a bow.

@FaithFertility: oh I know- my Lo wouldn't wear one for the first two years of her life. She had no hair for a barrette and pulled the bands off as soon as she learned how to use her arms. But she recently found the pack of barrettes someone gave us when she was born and suddenly likes wearing bows in her hair (I'm guessing because of katerina kittycat!).

@oliviaoblivia: even at 2 and a quarter she doesn't have enough hair for a ponytail at all. It's just very fine blond curls, just enough to pin one side back.

Don't spend $$ until you make sure LO will wear them!
I know they say they get used to it, well my DD HATES them .....I can get her to wear for a picture for maybe 2 mins...lol @11 months

I can't offer any advice on headbands, they look ridiculous on my girls because their hair fans out behind them.
As for bows, a lot of etsy sellers will add no slip stuff to bows for you if you ask. I rarely spend more than a dollar or two a bow.
If you do a little pony tail first and put the bow behind the elastic they stay in better.

My 2 year old finally has enough hair for barrettes, AND is actually interested in wearing barrettes- hooray! We have one four pack of barrettes that we got when she was a bald baby, but I'd like to get a few more, especially with the holidays coming up.

What type of clips are best at this age? She has fine curly hair. The covered clips that we have (like the first picture) do slide out a bit. But she also will pull them out still, so I worry the second type would pull her hair out too. Which type do you prefer?

And for newborns, what should I look for in head bands that are comfy and will stay on? I'm just assuming this new baby will be as bald as big sister.

Finally how much is normal to pay for very simple bows and head bands? I'm not into the big ones, but some small coordinating ones for the two girls sounds pretty sweet. I'm pretty crafty so could probably make something simple, once I got supplies...

Eta adding pictures
