@bhbee: Yes! It's totally and completely normal for him to not be able to pay attention for long periods of time! We just had our kindergarten meet and greet with half the class connected on Google Meet and it was just absolute chaos. If yours is anything like ours, I don't think you'll be missing a ton, ha.

@raspberries: thank you, that link and the strategies are helpful to see! It was amazing ... today I caught him at the right time and he read the second half of the one we had started like it was no big deal ... could answer all the comprehension questions ... still not perfect but so much more fluent. I still think we’re going to try other things because of the attention span issues, but I am trying to remember that he started K five days ago and having no attention span is totally normal for a boy this age! It’s actually a reason I want to drop virtual school for full homeschooling - we are using up his attention on zoom where he’s not learning much new and then it’s harder to supplement after.

@bhbee: So after we finished the book, we just moved on to My First or Level 1 books from our library, but my kid is just starting kindergarten next week. He's very self-motivated though - he asked for a book on how to read for his 4th birthday, which is when/how we started Teach Your Kid, and he was the driving force for completing lessons (which helped keep him into it, I think - if he wanted to skip a day, that was totally allowed.)

That being said, I thought about what I'd do if my kid was having the same issues as yours, and I found this article that might be helpful for you: https://www.readinghorizons.com/reading-strategies/decoding/4-steps-from-decoding-strategies-to-reading-fluency. I think I'd probably keep encouraging finger tracking and sounding out while reading together - maybe even going back and doing a few of the earlier lessons in the How to Teach Your Kid book where they start blending sounds so those common sound combinations are really drilled in. Good luck, mama!

This is an old show, but my 5.5 year old has enjoyed some of the snippets from "Between the Lions" on PBS for some phonics rules/review. There are collections of the show clips organized here: https://www.pbslearningmedia.org/collection/btl07-ex/

Some of the songs are catchy for her, and she'll remind me of what she saw here when we're reading together sometimes. Meanwhile, my three year old is terrified of the lions in the show, so we have to time when we watch it carefully! :)

@Alexandra603: I like that rule about double vowels! My oldest learned to call the e’s “sneaky” and my son loves that :silly:

I'm on lesson 94 right now with my just turned 6 year old. She's flying through the later lessons. I will say that I do sometimes teach her rules that they don't explicitly teach in the book (like 'when two vowels go a walkin the first one does the talkin') and those seem to help her. The silent e rule helps a lot too. I would probably take a break and try something different for your guy based on what you're reporting.

@raspberries: I think you are right and I just needed someone to say it to me! We have this froggy phonics series I randomly picked up and he’s been way more excited about that - we need to move on.

As someone who’s ahead of us, anything you really liked for next steps? My oldest learned to read at school so I have no experience. I feel like he’s struggling to make the transition beyond decoding. Not sure I am using the right term but while he can get through a story, he will decode the same CVC word every time, an easy one like ran, even if he’s seen it a million times. It’s like in that book he just only decodes and isn’t increasing fluency. Maybe a change in material will help!

@bakingdoodle: @wrkbrk: it is definitely an age/readiness issue so possibly it could work later, but of course nothing works for every kid! My son was almost 5.5 when we started this summer. We skipped all the early lessons but still did some that were easy for him to get going. I feel like he absolutely could not have done it at 4 or early 5.

@bhbee: Good for you!!!!!! We tried the book also and gave up after like six lessons. He may be too young I’m not sure but he wouldn’t sit still or pay attention :(

Gonna follow This for info. This book was recommended to me by a homeschool mom of 4 for my kindergartener and I am not too sure about it.

We did the whole thing this past year. I'd say if you're taking 2-3 days to finish lessons and he's still not very into it, you've probably gotten the most you can from it. It just continues the same way, with longer 2-part stories that definitely won't help with anyone's frustration.

I am glad you had success with the book. I ordered the book based on the recommendations here... but when I opened the book, I knew, I would not be able to follow through. To me, it was even more abstract that Bob's books. My daughter is turning 5 this week... and until about 1 month ago, could not do an--> pan. But I used the mini books from themeasuredmom and it's just a timing/ readiness and she's able to make at least those sounds. Sorry I am not too helpful but I am so glad you had success with it.

Anyone in here who has done the whole thing?

We’re on lesson 79. I’ve been so impressed with what’s he’s learned so far (kinder boy, 5.5, probably homeschooling this year) but I feel like we’re hitting a wall with these long stories and no more “clues”. Frustration is up and he struggles to pay attention.

I’ve been splitting it up so we take 2-3 days to do a lesson, but I’m wondering if it’s just time to jump ship. I was planning to do Logic of English Foundations B next and maybe we should just go ahead and go there?

Any thoughts on using this book appreciated! Figured worth a shot to post here since this is where I learned about it
