This seems kind of crazy to me. Our daycare just puts up notices that it's Teacher Appreciation Week and encourages parents to thank their kids' teachers, and that's it. We gift the teachers individually. Nothing is mandatory!

@Mamaof2: You're right! I didn't even really consider it that way. My son is in a class with 3 teachers and 8 babies, but my daughter has 2 teachers and there are 20 kids. I suppose they also have to cover some of the admin staff too (receptionist, music teacher, etc) but it does seem like they're asking for a lot. I don't know if they will keep track or not, but they are asking for the donation via a form and then they'll autodraft it from our bank account the way that tuition is paid.

@2PeasinaPod: The way they word it, it doesn't seem like it is optional.

Our daycare does something similar (twice a year, actually - it makes DH and I crazy) but it's treated more as suggestions for you to participate where you like. We usually do 1-2 fairly cheap things (like handwritten notes for each teacher with a $5 gift card tucked inside one day and then bring in a homemade treat to share another day).

This year I didn't participate at all in the second week because it was announced very suddenly and life was too crazy that week. I don't think the teachers have resented our lack of participation.

@sunny: that is nuts! How many kids in the class? Ours had 20 - that's $600 for ONE. Classroom- so $600 for 2 teachers to have coffee and a manicure??

Is this just a suggestion or it's a mandatory participation? I mean, our day care does teacher appreciation week and gives suggestions of what they'd like to do if they have enough donations, but none of it is mandatory, and they're not keeping track of who donates vs. who doesn't.

@Mamaof2: I prefer to gift the teachers directly too. The school has asked for $30-35 for each child to go towards the group events. I feel like that is so excessive on top of what they're already asking from parents!

@sunny: I prefer to gift the teachers directly but if this is what they were doing I would give $10 for each event.

And yes I would expect the owner/director to do something as well and would ask them what it is.

@bushelandapeck: @petitenoisette: At our last daycare, for teacher appreciation week the owner sent out the schedule which was similar to this. However, she specifically put "ABC Daycare is catering lunch for everyone" for one of the days. I really liked seeing that the owner was also participating.

Both my kids attend the daycare so I also have to double down on all the gifts... :meh:

An onsite manucurist!!!! Wow...

Yea I'm a teacher myself but I wouldn't be thrilled to get this list of requests... Especially because I feel that my school does some things to prioritize profits for the owner versus appreciation for their teachers. I think teacher appreciation week should be more on the administration rather than parents who are already paying a lot of money for their kids to go to the school.

My kids don't attend daycare but that seems like a lot! I wouldn't expect parents to provide something for every day of the week. And yes, I would expect the owner to do something for the staff. When we have teacher appreciation week at my sons school, we donate money towards a teacher gift and then some parents volunteer to bring snacks during the week for all the teachers to share.

@sunny: so they want a one time donation plus a gift card on Tuesday, donation Wednesday and a donation Friday?

If your school requests a cash donation for teacher appreciation week, how much do you donate?

To give some context, here's the other things they want us to do for the week:

Monday - bring a home made card
Tuesday - bring something from the staff wishlist (e.g. gift card)
Wednesday - donations will be used for an onsite manucurist
Thursday - bring flowers
Friday - donations will be used for an onsite coffee cart

Side question -- do you expect the administration (aka the daycare owner) to also do something for teacher appreciation week and should they let you know what they're doing?
