I ended up just giving the head teachers a card/giftcard to Target, then I got a box of munchkins for both classrooms.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: daycares are usually considered private entities, I think...and I know daycare employees are not under the same code of ethics as public school teachers. Still, I feel funny about "large" gifts because of this. Our daycare just leaves out bags with each teacher's name for people to drop goodies in if they want to.

@tlynne: In my state, it's against the law to gift public servants cash, as it could be construed as a bribe, so when it comes to teacher appreciation, they do things like host a breakfast/lunch/coffee. I would much rather get a list than have to come up with stuff on my own, I don't have the time!

@tlynne: we are in the same state. So, were the daycare teachers supposed to give me back my GC?

@math.nerd: if you skip the GC section at Target where they have all kinds of stores and brands to choose you can get a Target GC and put any denomination you want on it. Those cards are at checkout and near greeting cards. I almost picked up a Target GC with the other brands and saw that it costs $5 to activate in addition to the GC amount.

@math.nerd: you are not wrong to be annoyed..I'd be downright pissed, and likely would not participate. BTW in my state, it is actually illegal for the teacher to accept a gift larger than about $20 (even for teacher appreciation) because it theoretically creates a conflict of interest for the teacher. We can lose our teaching license for accepting large gifts

@Ajsmommy: Just throwing in my two cents here...the best gift I received for teacher appreciation was a small bag with a Sprite, a candy bar, and a $1 lottery ticket. I think I'm going to do something similar for my sons' teachers. I don't expect anything from my students (I teach in an area with extremely high poverty), but this one made me 😃. I often get sweet thank you notes, too, which I enjoy. Our administrators often do something special for us, too...like provide breakfast or let us wear jeans to work.

Our school sent out a notice that they were holding a breakfast for the teachers Wednesday of this week and to let the director know if you'd like to contribute anything. I was out of town working, so ahead of me leaving I wrote a nice note in a card, left space for DH to write some too, and set it aside to give to my daughter's teacher that day.
He also volunteered to bring fruit to the breakfast, and grabbed a Target gift card for the card to LO's teacher.

It was low-key but special, and left it up to the parents to decide if/what they wanted to do for their individual teachers as well as if/how they wanted to contribute to the breakfaast.

I'd be SUPER annoyed to get a list of things to do or buy each day.

Our daycare does lunches, breakfasts, and gifts for the teachers all week. They asked that parents give $25/kid for these events. I'm a little annoyed by this since I'm already spending over $30K on daycare for my kids. Don't get me wrong, their teachers are great, but can't you budget $50 of my $30K toward some lunches for the teachers one week of the year? I'd get them giftcards or something if I hadn't already contributed. Instead, they'll probably just get a card if I get a chance this week.

Sorry if this sounds ungrateful, they just seem to be nickle and diming us lately with fees, fundraisers, etc.

They sent home little notecards for the kids to write or draw things they liked about their teachers so we did that. Then the school hosts a lunch and a breakfast for the teachers and parents were asked to sign up to bring something in. I brought in a lunch entree, which feels like more than day, plates and napkins, so I think that’s enough? And no judgment on the parents bringing the napkins either- I purposely took the more involved option because this week I didn’t mind doing it and other weeks t would have put me over the edge. I’ll give an extra end of the year gift but that’s about it.

@MrsADS: Last year I made fruit kabobs using fruits of all colors and put them on bamboo skewers and I made enough so every staff member and front office person could have at least 1 skewer. I did blueberries, green grapes, strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, and watermelon. I don't think I spent more than $20-25 on the fruit and it took me under an hour to make. I was repeatedly told for weeks after how good they were and how refreshing they were because they were SO tired of all the junk food they got. They were so popular, I made them for DS2's birthday the following week and got raves on them too. Who knew fruit salad on a stick would be so popular??

My kid's preschool director sent out a detailed list of what gifts to get each day and what to say on the card. I find it actually SUPER annoying and off putting. We love the school and we do a lot of nice things for the teachers throughout the year. I'm not against teacher appreciation week, but mandated gifts sort of ruffle my feathers. And the gifts include a Starbucks gift card for one day and a Target gift card for another - neither of which I could find for less that $20 each. (Target was $25).

Am I wrong to be annoyed? I'm especially peeved by being told what to write on a card!! It's an assignment, not a gesture of appreciation! Ok. End rant. :-)

Ugh I've kind of blanked out on this. My older son's school did a lunch today that I forgot to give money in for. Oops. So I'll give that and then probably get them a gift card so they can get coffee on me one day. Probably do the same for my little son's school as well. Sigh...I always feel like such a fail at this stuff!

I'm not sure what (if anything) to do.... they are having lunches/breakfasts/etc. for the teachers most days this week, and they asked for parent volunteers (which I can't do). They asked us to send in a handmade card from the child and a letter from the family to give to the teachers (did both). They didn't ask for any $$$.

My husband does drop-off and pickup and he said that he saw parents bringing stuff into my son's classroom for the teachers - like a big box of chocolates from Trader Joes, etc. etc. Soooo now IDK if I should bring something or what! There are 4 main teachers in his class but a fair amount of "drop-ins". I feel like they probably have gotten so much junky food I hate to bring more of that, plus you never know what people can or want to eat, etc.

They ask each kid to write a note about why they love their teacher (er, the parents write it I guess), and they post them all up on the hallways of the school.

They also ask for a collection from parents and then they divide the money into a gift card of some kind for the teachers.

The board members sponsor a lunch for the teachers as well.

I usually also write a nice card, bring a bouquet of flowers, and make a healthier treat (because they get completely slammed with brownies and cookies and donuts all week).
