No, I purposely didn’t send my child to my school. He attends where we are zoned. I wanted that separation.

I'm a teacher and plan for my kids to go to my school, I would not want to be their teacher and my sister works their as well and I also would not want them to be in her class either.

My kids went to the preschool program at the school I work at. I was not a huge fan. MY daughter had a friend come over to play and her older sister came along who was in my fourth grade class. I was a little awkward having one of my older students come to my house and come to my daughters birthday and things like that. When my boys were in preschool there were a few boys who mistreated my kids and their parents didn't care. Not just boys will be boys type stuff but things like burying my sons glasses in the wood chips repeatedly. I still have to teach those boys even though mine are at a different school and it is very difficult to get rid of the mama bear stuff when your kids are involved. Obviously I have to and I am a professional but it's not easy. So I like the separation from work and personal life.

My mom taught 1st grade in our K-8th school. We were never in her class, though.
We LOVED it. We loved going to her room before/after school. We helped a lot in her classroom or did our own homework. We got the "inside" look and that was really fun. If we ever forgot anything at school after hours, my mom had keys so we could just go and get it. Small things like that made it awesome.
We were all really "good" kids, though. Great grades, no behavior problems etc. I think it would've been much harder on my mom had she had to deal with strife from her colleagues.
I was a teacher too before my son was born. If I ever go back to the classroom, I'd love to be in the same school as him. But, I also think you have to be critical of your own strengths/weaknesses in separating school and work. You'd know your kid's teachers on a more personal level. If you have a hard time respecting them as the teacher, especially if you don't get along with them, then I think problems would arise.

I taught out of our district so my DD did not attend where I was teaching; however, I would have enjoyed having her there. I would have never been her teacher, though, as I worked as a SPED and my daughter was/is in mainstreamed GenEd. I now instruct (part-time) adult education at a college and, were my DD or DS ever to [actually] wish to audit a class or take one of mine, I would be greatly flattered... I don't see that happening though, because I'm "So not cool because I'm just mom!" (* DD's words just a few days ago. 🤣)

@MamaBear87: unfortunately not my situation :( 1/3 of our teachers are emergency certified and kids don't get science until 4th or social studies until 6th. Those are deal breakers to me :(

@meadow: thanks for those ideas!

@Alba4: @chuckles: true, there is 1-2 other schools in my district that I would be willing to send him. There are many schools in my husband's district that would work.

@MsMini: I def. wouldn't want to teach them, at least. It's very easy to switch subjects or grades to avoid that, thankfully.

@Katrocap: yes about the disagreeing with admin.

------------

We live in my husband's district, and have friends that go there. We are actually on the PTO board of the local elementary school even though we don't have kids there. We started volunteering there with our church small group and 3 years later, here we are.

Right now I teach in a different district than my son's school. I have thought about applying for jobs in his district just so that our schedules for days off and start/end dates of school align, but I wouldn't necessarily need to or want to teach at his specific school. Plus, even though my commute is pretty short (25 minutes), it would be nice to be even closer to home. But I teach a fairly specific type of class (self-contained, autism-specific), so my options are a little limited.

My 3 year-old is in my class this year--eek! But that's 3's, which is much different. Ideally, I would love to move to K-5 after my youngest is 2 (I'm pregnant now, so a few years off), and would love to teach at their school. I'll take anything in the district, but it would be great to be at their school.

My daughter just started K at my school, which is the school she is zoned for. I will actually be working in her classroom quite a bit as a literacy coach. It’s a great school and she has a fabulous teacher. I’m excited to not have to miss any of her big school moments and get to see a bit of her daily life, without being too intrusive.

I teach at an elementary/middle school and many of my colleagues have sent their kids there, especially for the lower grades. However, I disagree with admin in many areas (behavior management, overtesting, etc.) and thus don't want to be a parent who might complain about policies where I work. My son started kindergarten at his neighborhood school this week and several of his friends from nursery school are there, which eased the transition. If he came to my school he wouldn't know any other kids.

My DH and I both work in high schools. He's an AP. More than likely DD will attend his school. Which would be awesome! If I could I wouldn't mind switching to elementary school and working at my DD's. It would be so convenient.

My Mom was a teacher in a large school board. That board actually had a rule preventing teachers from teaching in the school their children attended. Personally, I am very glad that as a student I had space from my parents.

I live one town over....on purpose. I didn't buy a house in district because I want my personal life to have s little space. And I absolutely dont want to teach my kids' friends. Or worse, SO. What if they break up while I'm there teacher. Or if I have a student (high school) that was awful to my kid in middle school. How will I not pre-judge them.

So yes, school calendar would be great. But the rest....not for me.

I also absolutely would have no desire to quit my job & start over. no way!

No. My kids will attend the school in our home district. I like that I teach at a different district and enjoy the privacy from working life. I do like that I have the option to send them to the district where I teach. Our home district is super small, and if my kids would like a larger high school (or more challenging course work (AP) they can always attend the district where I teach.

My mom was a teacher and we went to her school from 4-8th grades (my brother went k-8) it was awesome in most respects. My mom also worked at a smaller, lower income district and I feel I grew alot as a person going to school with kids who had less than I did for the most part. That said it was a very warm and inviting school and very much supported by the community. Just food for thought maybe you don't have to move and can have your son at your school

Mine will most likely attend my school but even if they didn't, I wouldn't change jobs because I am happy where I am at and it just isn't worth it to me to make such a huge transition for the 2 years that we have jr high here. Now if I was unhappy in my job or contemplating a move anyway, that would be another story.

I am certified to teach grades K-12, though my sweet spot is 4th-8th (currently teach 8th). My husband is certified 7-12, and he currently wants to be high school forever. We teach in different districts, so slightly different master schedules. There is a somewhat significant pay & benefits difference, with mine being better but he enjoys his job more.

I VERY much want to teach at my kids' school for all the obvious advantages: logistics of pick-up/drop-off, master schedule alignment, being involved with the teachers and the school community, etc.

However, this would involve quitting my school bc there's no way I'm sending him here; and most likely quitting my district. I have differing emotions about this. I've also got at least 3 years before this is an issue, but if I am TTC, pregnant, or on mat leave, I can't leave my district due to $$.

DH has implied that I will quit my job to go work at ****** school, because he thinks LO1 & LO2 will go there. I'm open to it, but it would mean a pay cut and benefits cut, and *maybe* an increased workload (but "easier" district).

AZ has open enrollment and they can go anywhere.

Anyway.... Teacher bees: Do your kids attend your school? Will they? Thought process? Rationale? Ups, downs?
