@crazydoglady: same but with no teacher input at all and a heavy emphasis on it being optional, not graded, not collected.

Not sure for DH. Same idea of optional enrichment but more online.

@crazydoglady: He actually started in public schools and moved to private because the only jobs he could find were ones where he was is actual physical danger from students and students' parents (several teachers at one of his old schools were actually on disability for PTSD after being assaulted by students). Plus he kept getting laid off every year (this was back in 2008-2012). I think if there was a "perfect" position that opened up (a full-time position in an alternative-methods charter with a very supportive admin) he'd probably stay in education, but the likelihood of that happening is slim.

Honestly at this point I think the only way he's staying in education is if him and several colleagues he knows from around the state splinter off and form their own school. Which is just.. not going to happen.

@Miss Ariel: I'm having a really hard time supporting my husband. He's so stressed and there's just nothing I can do. I was trying to find work so he could quit but now he's really forced into a bad place. Emotionally he's just done. He's having to just learn to emotionally divorce himself from his work and it's really breaking who he is as a person. I really don't know what I can do either. Since my girls are home and daycares are all closed I can't exactly be looking for work right now. And who's hiring? Nowhere that I can make enough to support all of us, and nowhere that offers health benefits. Gah sorry to thread-jack! I'll stop rambling now.

@newlypregnantlady: my husband is also going crazy with this. He’s teaches math at a community college. So far he’s bought a microphone, camera, and white board to record lectures from our house. (The white board was 75% off from a teacher supply store since the wholesalers sold it at cost.) He has a week before classes go live but the school keeps sending new updates (include captions on videos for those that may be hearing impaired, have at least one live lecture per class, etc...)

@newlypregnantlady: I feel bad reading this (and hearing other stories of teachers who are so overwhelmed by this) because I am literally doing nothing but checking my email and responding to students. (Belidve me, I want to do more but we have all these state parameters.) Has your husband considered a switch to public education? It's night and day!

My husband teaches HS at a private school and he’s teaching via Zoom and it’s basically stomping out his will to live. Currently he’s trying to gain momentum amongst the faculty for a coup wherein they eschew the traditional fourth quarter classes and instead divide the student body amongst the faculty and act as in-depth advisors on student-led independent study projects. It’s a private, alternative education based high school so legally it’s easy for them to do this. But I know it’s going to fall on deaf ears and my heart is just breaking for him.

I literally spent the last week of Feb getting serious about job hunting so DH could either quit over the summer or go part-time because he is just so burned out. This is taking a massive amount out of him and I’m very worried that if he catches this virus it will be very bad for him because he’s just so stressed. He feels like a crazy person because almost none of the other faculty care at all that their students are clearly not paying attention and that they’re all just wasting time to appease parents. It’s sort of the last straw for him in education.

Anyways sorry if this is a novel! Hope everyone’s well and safe and not losing their minds!

@charm55: I completely understand and it's true, I just never do worksheets. It was hard to be rushed because we basically had to point and something and say "that" so they could start duplicating. Oh, and the packet we chose was for test prep...and just found out state testing has been canceled this year...

@crazydoglady: I generally really (really) hate worksheets and packets, but I saw a tweet from one of my favourite edu-celebrities that basically said: In these crazy times, packets are familiar and manageable and equitable. It made me rethink my position on them a bit. And as a sidenote, to my great disappointment, my 6 year old has been totally loving the math workbook that my mom bought her. 🤦🏼‍♀️ - haha

I’m hoping if we do prepare packages that we have the time to come up with some half meaningful activities though. It must have been tough to be so rushed !

@LemonJack: I hear you. I don't like our approach at all, but the work had to be something that wasn't internet dependent, and had to be compiled in a couple of days. Geez, I hate packets.

Initially a 2 week closure was announced and teachers were not expected (or allowed) to prepare anything for students, whether online or work packages.

They just announced the closure will be extended and the department is looking at starting some online/at home options in April. I am eager to get back in touch with parents and students. I do appreciate, though, that they’re taking the time to ensure equitable access and define reasonable expectations for students. I also appreciate that these first couple of weeks has been time to just breathe and settle into our new normal.

We’re online teaching. We worked together as teams to get our stuff together earlier this week, then began instruction. We were told we need to do only review at this point, but the school shutdown has now been extended so we’re going to have to figure out how to best teach new stuff.

The past two days were spent sending out simple assignments to make sure kids were able to access everything, zooming with groups throughout the day to catch up and troubleshoot, and contacting home if we hadn’t heard from a student. I’m overwhelmed and exhausted, but I know this is the right approach.

Our district is fortunate that we’re 1:1 which makes this much more possible.

Our school just had teachers agree on a packet (that we didn't even create) for the school to put on the website. Since all assignments are optional, we didn't feel the need to put a lot of work into it. We need to be "on call" via email, but that's it... for now, of course, as thing can change.
