I am certified first through eighth grade as a self-contained teacher, and fourth through eighth grade as a language arts teacher. I have a masters in elementary education. But none of it is specifically for being an intervention specialist. What subject do you teach? I taught kindergarten for three years, taught fourth grade literacy for one year, and now work with E.L.L. students two mornings a week. I also have my own tutoring business, and work with students 4-5 afternoons a week.<br /> 2. How old are your students? Previously, they were 5 and 6 (kindergarten) and 9 and 10 (4th grade). The E.L.L. students I work with are 11. As a tutor, I have a wide range of ages. Currently my youngest is a kindergartner, and my oldest is a junior in high school!<br /> 3. How do you like it? I love my balance now. Being a full-time classroom teacher wasn't a great fit for me. Now, as a mom, I am so fortunate with the balance I have. I still am tied to a school, so get to keep up-to-date on curriculum and trends in education, but I get to (mostly!) avoid a lot of the politics that come with being on a teaching team. I LOVE working one-on-one with students as a tutor. It is truly a perfect fit for me, and I hope to be able to do this work for many years to come.</p> <p>@travellingbee: If you don't mind me asking, what kind of certification did you need to get above and beyond a regular teaching degree to become an interventionist? How did you like it?</p> <p>I really enjoyed pulling together the curriculum and reading lists! That's what I had always pictured as being a big part of the teaching experience, and I loved it. But I was surprised by what an emotional job it was (for me). I loved about 1/3 of my students, couldn't stand 2-3 of them, and felt apathetic towards the rest. Those few students really had a huge impact on my teaching experience!</p> <p>I was also surprised by how draining it was to teach. I did it once a week in the afternoon (it was a 3-hour class). I think I'll try teaching again after I retire and can just focus on it... it was tough to balance teaching and my regular job at the same time!
