@808love: I see. Our state has guidelines for daycare centers in terms of safety regulations an staff training, but I didn't think of just how much flexibility a DCP would have over a public school.

@kiddosc: well that's a little comforting the teacher got the photo posting half right according your their policies.

@kiddosc: Good thing you spoke up!! Way to resolve this issue. People just don't know these things.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: In our single school district state, we have strict guidelines starting at the elementary level. Our preschools are privately run so anything goes. I find many of them are just green to the whole tech scene as it is not a highly technical environment and privacy policies have not been set in place to keep up with our ever changing and growing media explosion. That along with well intentioned yet newbie teachers just love to see pics of the kids smiling and super proud of their jobs. Plus a lot of advertising goes on because it is a highly competitive business.

More food for thought: there are some school districts in other states that are completely twitterfied. These areas get parent release signatures and the kids are subject to all kinds of social media photos to gain attention for their precious everyday educational moments and outstanding achievements.

@kiddosc: Glad to hear she was receptive, but also generally outrageous that they're posting pictures of kids on FB without knowing how it works. I'm glad you spoke up!

So I went in before work to talk to the director, DH does drop-offs so I never see her. She says they don't have a policy, but that the teachers are allowed to take pictures on field trips with the intent that they be posted on the center facebook page. The center is tagged in the photos and I think everyone, the director included, thought they were being posted to the center's page? It really sounds like it's a case of people not knowing how to use facebook correctly and not realizing that the pictures being on a personal page opened them up to viewing by so many people. Regardless, she is implementing a new policy that any photos need to come to her and she will post them on the center's page, which I'm fine with. She will also state that teachers cannot post them to their personal pages and discuss the need for a policy with the director for the whole group of centers.

@regberadaisy: Pictures of him, all on field trips.

@daniellemybelle: I don't think her intentions were bad either, I think this is a lack of proper training by the center.

I would be really upset. We have to sign a waiver any time a picture of E might even possibly be used in promotional materials, and I would be livid if I found out his photo was being shared on FB without my knowledge or consent.

@kiddosc: Yes - I agree that it is different, especially because she is not his teacher and you don't have that relationship and trust there. We built a great relationship with this teacher that posted pictures of LO on FB and she was more like a good family friend. If it were a random person that worked there, and if I had no way of knowing about it because I wasn't tagged, it would definitely bother me more. And especially because you are not Facebook friends but could still find it, so she's not being very careful about privacy settings.

I still think it was likely done without any bad intentions, and ultimately it is probably the school's responsibility to have guidelines on this stuff. So I would talk to the director.

@kiddosc: I would be upset by this! Our center has us sign a release for whether kids can be photographed, but even then it's specified it's only for their brochures, website, and the center's Facebook page as advertising.

@Applesandbananas: There is, but I'll go to the director first and then escalate if she doesn't respond appropriately.

@Happygal: Oh, I definitely don't think her intent was anything but innocent. From the comments it's like she really thinks of these kids as her kids and is proud of them. I think she just didn't realize it might be inappropriate and I'd like to see a policy in place and have the staff reminded of it.

@daniellemybelle: I think it's different if the parents are tagged. These were not tagged and it was a bit jarring to come across pictures of my son floating around the internet that I didn't know existed. The daycare center has a Facebook page and there has occasionally been a picture of him there. I'm OK with that since I'm aware of that page and could ask that a pic be taken down if I was uncomfortable. That's a lot different to me than a random woman (who has never been his teacher) posting photos on her personal page.

People have very different ideas of what is ok with sharing things on social media. I know lots of people who love to share pictures and updates b/c they're proud, excited, etc. I think keeping in mind the person's intent is helpful when dealing with conflict.

I wouldn't share pictures of someone else's child from school b/c we have a strict county wide policy and have all been trained on that. I probably wouldn't think twice about posting a picture with a friend's child in the shot if they were also on FB and sharing pictures on their own.

I hope the conversation goes well and things are quickly resolved!

@kiddosc: eventhough no one (teacher/ asst director/ director) thought this was inappropriate doesn't mean they won't be receptive to the feedback. At the end of the day it goes against their stated policy in terms of the signed a photo release for X purpose not Y purpose.

If it were me I would demand that all pictures with your child in them be removed immediately (by the end of day). It's ridiculous to post pictures of other people's children without the parents consent. This goes for children of friends and family too. Ask first!

I'm off of FB, but when my kid goes to daycare I may have to get a profile again just to protect their privacy.

I would be upset because I don't like people knowing where my kids go to daycare. I would probably just ask the teacher directly to remove them and not do it anymore. Then, I'd separately discuss the need for a policy with the director without bringing up the exact incident if possible.

No elementary school teachers I know would do this but preschool is different. I still agree it should not be up without the parents' explicit permission given. As a teacher, I started telling my parent chaperones not to post fieldtrip pics of other kids on social media due to privacy concerns. (My own!)
