@meganmp: It's been a while since I've had to redo mine, but I would put things on there like committees, leadership roles, grade level/department chair, having a student teacher, mentoring a new teacher, conferences, additional training/certification, etc. I'm sure if you google teacher resumes they will have some good ideas.

@Mrs Coffee: Yeah, it's in a rather low income area of south Seattle. It was so great for a while, and now... no. I appreciate the thought of you looking in Tacoma for me! I live in West Seattle, though, so the commute might be a bit much, especially because my husband works in Bellevue. If I can't find something around here, I'll suck it up and stay there, but I really want to find something new.
@mrs. 64: Thank you for the vote of confidence! I think I just don't know WHAT to put on my resume. Committees? Training?

I've been in that position before and I'm so happy that I switched. You have worked their for 9 years so you should have a lot to put on your resume! Obviously during the interview I would focus on the "ready for new challenges/opportunities" aspect rather than the "can't wait to get out of that hellhole" aspect. Good luck!

@meganmp: aw man, I've been there and YES, it's the hardest thing you'll ever go through.

If you've been at this job since 2005, you have 9 years experience, right? You're golden. You can get a job anywhere. Absolutely put all your experience from your current school on your resume and get a good letter of rec from your principal and partner teacher.

I'm also a teacher (now school librarian) and I'm a bad job hopper-- always chasing the dream of a better teaching situation (by the way, dream achieved. I have the best job possible in a school setting right now). I'm in my 4th school and this is my 11 the year teaching.

You don't have to go into details in interviews about why you left. Just keep it positive, say you are looking for a new challenge and use what you've been through with difficult parents and students to show yourself as an expert on classroom management.

My first 9 years were working in an inner city, super low income district and I went through everything you described on a weekly basis. One of my students died in a shootout with police when he was trying to break into a well know tourist attraction. There was a gang shooting in the HS at point blank range (The student shot died). My first year teaching I had a boy with an ankle monitoring Bracelet in the same class as two students who had restraining orders against him--wtf.

And now I teach in a nice, quiet suburb where some of the biggest problems are having to fight for money so the robotics team can go to nationals.

BIG DIfference. You can do it! You've paid your dues and then some, now find a job that's less emotionally taxing.

Wall me your e-mail address and I'll send you my resume so you can get an idea of what to do. My job is similar - my school is the only one in the district in the bad area. I can't stay there past dark without getting worried.

@meganmp: Oh sweetie....I'm sorry it was a rough week! My first full time job was awful, horrible parents, horrible community, it was so exhausting and I felt like I never got anywhere, so I feel you.

Include any info you have about internships, other jobs, volunteer work, etc. Good luck, everything will work out :)

So sorry to hear you had a rough week, I have been there and done that. Teaching is one of the hardest jobs ever and people who have no teaching experience have NO idea what a teacher does on a daily basis. Hang in there and remember that you're helping your students and everything you do is to help them to become successful. Hang in there!

I'm dying. I need a new friggin' job.

To sum up- I've been in my current school since September of 2005. It's been a good school to me, it really has... but I just can't take it there any more. My district is anything but supportive, my VP does little to nothing, the principal (whom I love and adore) is stressed beyond belief and might be going to a different state next year, and my teaching partner is moving as well- across the country. All of that would be fine, if I didn't have what we fondly call "The Crazy" at our school. My principal compared it to the projects (which sounds horrible, but hear me out)- you put a lot of people with high needs (and we're talking both the parents and kids here) in the same place and then don't have enough supports in place, things are going to go south quickly. Examples:
- Substitute teachers being hit in the face by students as part of a game that they're playing
- 6 year olds who, on a regular basis, tell the VP to fuck off
- multiple 2nd graders who, despite massive efforts from their K, 1st and current teachers, are unable to read, who also have incredible behavior disorders (as one would expect- they're frustrated!) and all of it is blamed on the teacher because they are refusing to hit the child to "get them in line", as the parent said.
- a parent who tried to run over a teacher with her car because she was standing in the crosswalk, escorting kiddos across the street
- a parent who, just today, cussed me out, telling me that I'm a mother-fucking bitch, and I need to mind my own fucking business, and she's going to punch me in my god damn fucking face (I apologize for the language, but this is what she was screaming at me in front of not only her children, but 150 kids waiting for the bus today). My crime? Telling her that she can't park in the bus line. Mind you, this is the third time that I've had to tell her this, which she was quick to point out.
... and that's just this week.

I have to be done. I can't do it anymore.

All this to say... what the heck do I put on my resume? My subbing work before this job? Just details from this one? What kind of details?

Sorry for the rant... it's been a rough week.
