Wow. The strike was just announced for starting next Thursday. 57,000 school staff voted, 78% , in favor. Pay questions haven't been answered (we get paid throughout the year and summer, and the days will be added on to the end of the year.) My husband and I are both teachers and live near the capital so we will probably be down there for the majority of the time. Wow. I cant believe it is actually happening.

@DesertDreams88: Sending solidarity from Vancouver, BC, Canada! Three years ago, we walked the picket lines for 3 weeks. Financially speaking, our local union did offer grocery store and gas gift cards to any teacher that needed them. In addition, financial grants up to $2000 were given out to those on single incomes/with families/etc.

Hoping that your husbands union has something to soften the blow a bit.

You'll get through this! The fight for strong public education is such an important one.

@peachykeen: glad to hear that your state is finally putting the money where it matters! I agree it is frustrating when none of the money is earmarked for teacher salaries. On the flip side, here in AZ, the govt is proposing 1% raises.... by cutting into the school's capital funds.... which are already critically underfunded to the point where the districts are suing the state.

@808love: thanks for the financial tips!

@Anagram: Yes that was my thread from before, and you're totally right about inflation. Also health insurance has been going up, but it's been doing that across the entire economy, so I know I don't have a right to complain there.

@FaithFertility: we are a right to work state as well, and I believe so was OK. strikes can still happen in right to work states , but there is no job protection. However, there is a critical teacher shortage in AZ (pic below) so that inherently protects us... I hope. The critical element is districts getting on board. It seems like many are bc they're frustrated by the lack of funding , but some are wary of "politics."

I don't know what I'd do in that situation, but I absolutely support the teachers' strikes. Teachers are paid far too little for the amount of work they do and the value they add to society. We have underfunded education for so long, it's ridiculous. It's not just salaries, either, but the condition of the schools and materials.

I'm not a teacher, but it's been on my radar. I'm sorry it's come to this, and I wish you the best of luck if you do strike. Teachers deserve better.

It's definitely on my radar but DH is a teacher. We're in a non-union state and the governor just fully-funded education for the first time in I don't know how many years (definitely as long as I've known my husband!) so I wonder if that decision was influenced by all the high-profile strikes...

DH is irritated that the money is going straight to school districts rather than any instructions for teacher raises, but at least the money is going out I guess.

@Anagram: I can’t believe there are no pay raises! That’s insane. I’m so proud to have a strong teachers union here in NY! I wish other states paid their teachers better.

AZ definitely needs to strike! I remember from another thread that AZ doesn't have a pay scale anymore and people haven't been getting raises in a long time. That's ridiculous. And the governor is saying he's going to give teachers a 1% "raise" when inflation is projected to by 2%. If the raise isn't even keeping up with inflation, then it's a pay cut.

I didn’t know it was on the brink of strike in that many states. I feel your stress. I have been part of a teacher strike before. It lasted about 3 weeks if memory serves me correctly but I can’t remember exactly because I was on a paid break. I remember a senior teacher offering to float me a loan as I was single, living by myself with no family nearby. I was so thankful to have that security and kindness as my family was broke and I had been financially on my own for awhile. Anyway I feel for you. Look at the union and banks that are supportive. They offered some loan support, often with no interest during strike time. I wonder if mortgage company is willing to give loan forebearance for a financial hardship. If you have a 403b you may also get a no interest loan against a portion of your investments. When the strike is settled, there is a good chance they will give you back pay so hang in there.
It is so important for teachers to be involved in policy decisions, during strikes or not. We need to help out one another in order for the legislators to take care of people who have the burden, privilege and responsibility to reach our future generation- over 1000 hours a year per student-at the elementary school. And that is just face time. Not counting the hundreds of planning, designing, research and communications hours.

Have you been hearing and/or reading about the teacher strikes on WV, OK, KY, and possibly AZ? I ask bc I am an AZ teacher so it is all over my newsfeed and I read 3-5 news sources daily, and click on all education-related articles. But I don't know if it is in the radar for non-teachers and/or people in other states?

Here in AZ, the leaders are setting a strike date soon, they say. It is long overdue. I am on unpaid mat leave so I can protest at the Capitol with no issue, but my husband is also a teacher so it would be literally 0 income. And we don't want to strike but it feels like there is no other way to make the govt take us seriously. I can't believe it might actually happen.
