I kind of agree with Mrs. Lion that it's not appropriate but that everyone has bad days/moments and the teacher shouldn't be "punished" until there's a pattern; however, you aren't there all day and you can't see if there's a pattern, so I think you should tell the director and say the same thing--I understand everyone has bad moments, but I'm not here to see if it's a pattern, and it disturbed me and I want to let you know.

A director can't do their job if they don't know these things.

Anyway, I teach middle school and am a middle school media specialist and I work with loud kids (sometimes super rude, tough kids all day long), and I rarely rarely rarely ever raise my voice. I've found that it's just not a strategy that works. I do speak firmly and I sometimes have to make a lot of statements, like, "Okay, we're moving to the next activity. Everyone stop talking and turn and look at me for instructions. Jenny, that means you need to stop talking and turn to face me. Sam, you too." that kind of thing, before I can proceed.

But I pretty much never just yell out of anger/frustration. I used to do that sometimes before I had kids, but now I "get it" and would never.

Nope. Not appropriate. Raising a voice briefly to get attention and then talking in a calm but firm voice is appropriate under those circumstances. Yelling at 3 year olds is definitely not.

However, we all have those days when we are not at our best. I would maybe try to see if this is a pattern of behavior or a one time thing. If you feel like it could be a pattern, I would talk to the director. If you think it is a one time thing I would probably let it go, and talk to the director if you ever get the impression it is happening again. Since your child is older, you may be able to get a feel from him too.

Oh yes I would say something definitely. We try to never raise our voice in bm our household (read:try). It does happen, but it's not something I would want my kids around regularly! I wouldn't be okay with it. I grew up with a lot of yelling and it really bothers me.

understanding that there may have been unusual circumstances, generally i don't think yelling for a few minutes is acceptable. it's one thing for the teachers to raise their voices, to talk sternly, or even give a mini-lecture, but what your talking about sounds like anger, and that her temper was a bit out of control. this would bother me. i'd probably keep my eye on it and if it happens again, say something. or you could say something now. i'm sorry that happened.

This would definitely bother me. Like @kiddosc: said, it's one thing to yell "quiet" or "everyone sit down" or something...it's another to have a long winded yelling rant. I would be totally embarrassed if I was that teacher and did that in front of a parent. I would talk to the director.

Yes, absolutely. I would say something to the director.

When DD1 was an infant, DH arrived a bit early one day for pick up. He caught one teacher yell in frustration at our daughter. Now granted, she was an extremely fussy baby and drove us nuts often. But as someone paid to watch our kids, not cool. DH had walked in in the middle of it, another teacher saw him before that teacher did. The teacher gave the yelling teacher eye contact to let her know. We were not happy and talked to the director about it. Ever since then that teacher was super sweet . She was a floater in the baby room.

This would bother me. It's one thing to yell QUIET, then get the the kids involved in an activity to wrangle them, and quite another to yell for an extended period of time. I would probably speak to the director about it. The teacher obviously doesn't see a problem with it if she was willing to do it in front of a parent.

I saw something this morning at daycare and I'm wondering what other people might think about this.

Our daycare has kind of a non-traditional setup where I have to go through the outer door and then ring the door bell to get into the center. The preschool room is in front and is open/has windows to the vestibule so I can see what's going on in that room while I wait to be let in.

So today I got there and there was no teacher visible. Usually they see me and I don't even need to ring the bell. But there was no one in sight so I rang the bell. While I waited, the preschool room was going nuts. They were incredibly loud and yelling.

The preschool teacher showed up, let me in and started YELLING at the class. And not just a quick "QUIET", but a long string of yelling that was a few minutes long. We got inside and DS was just staring at her while she continued to yell.

I brought him to his room, where he cried and clung to me. This happens occasionally, but usually he's fine when I leave. I think the yelling kind of scared him :bummed: . When I left I could see the pre-k teacher and the preschool teacher telling the kids they needed to apologize for their behavior.

This is not the first time I've seen this teacher raise her voice, though it was definitely the longest I've seen it happen for. I'm a little concerned because DS is supposed to be moving up to that room later this year. This school has very very low turn over, so I don't really expect for anything to change before he moves up. He also doesn't react well to yelling. Even if I talk sternly to the dog he breaks out in tears and needs a hug.

So would this bother you? Or is the occasionally yelling at 3 year olds a normal thing for teachers?
