This makes me so sad. Schools are so underfunded and teachers are so under appreciated. I work at a private school in Sydney, Australia and the amount of money wasted on print materials, flat screens everywhere in the school, infrastructure that is all for show and not to benefit the students at all, makes me sick to my stomach. I'm glad to know about the reddit teacher supply exchange in the U.S. and I will start donating a portion of my wages to help underpaid teachers overseas pay for supplies. Education is so f*cked :bummed:

Reddit gifts does a teacher supply exchange each year that some teachers I know sign up for. Basically a teacher submits a request/wish list and random people sign up to be "elves" and are randomly assigned a teacher.

I used DonorsChoose and it was in no way frowned upon. In fact, we had an in-service day in which our principal told all of us to sit and just work on grants, DonorsChoose projects, field trip requests, etc. This was at a low-income school so very much necessary.

Even when I was in a "wealthier" area, I still requested projects on DonorsChoose and the teachers/admin were all for it. There was always a need for something (lab supplies, upgraded equipment, etc, books). It's powerful to show students that there are real people out there who care about them and want them to be equipped in school.

Kudos to you!!

I used DonorsChoose when I worked on the west side of Chicago in a bad neighborhood. It was great and I had a couple projects funded. How wonderful of you to support your friend!

I wished more of my teacher friends used these sites. One of my friends uses DonorsChose each summer to get books for her classroom and I think it's great. I know how limited some school budgets are and would love to help them out. One of my close friends works for the city and it's very well known in the media that they've had a bunch of budget cuts. I wish she would create an account so I can regularly donate to her and her class. I know there are friends who live and work in wealthier or more funded school districts and maybe may not feel the need to crowdsource.

Is is frown upon as a teacher to do this?

In the past, I usually just give my friend cash but since I'm out of state, I sent it to her electronically through PayPal. Unfortunately, the payment got returned. I think maybe her husband has to accept it. I told her it was coming.
Maybe I'll just send her a check from now on.
