Mt second grade teacher was awesome. She banned the word "easy" in her classroom because not everything came to easy to everyone all the time. She put me in the accelerated math class and stuck up for me when the other kids that were already in the class questioned why I was there.

My 11th grade English teacher was very supportive of my more liberal opinions and essays in light of the conservative setting we were in. My mom and I ran into her prom shopping and she said such nice things about me to my mom.

My 6th - 8 th grade music/choir teacher. I also took private voice lessons from her too. She was the most lovely woman and encouraged me. And when I was having problems at home (I had a rocky relationship with my mom at the time) sometimes we would just spend my lesson time talking and just making me feel better.

I had so many really awesome teachers from K-12. I am pretty sure that is why I went into education myself! It has been so fun for me to run into old students and help them the way many former teachers of mine helped me.

Yes - my 11th grade history teacher. He was funny, engaging, caring and an all around great teacher. He wrote a message in my yearbook that actually made me cry - saying how he knows I like to stay in the shadows but really deserve to come out to the spotlight (which I'm still working on) ;). He's in his 40th year of teaching now and we're FB friends.

My favourite teacher off all time, Mrs, Maxwell, was warm and Kind and did fun things with us. We hatched eggs in class, that was to my 6 year old mind the coolest thing ever.

I try to listen to my students and make them feel important just like she did. I hope I succeed at least some of the time, I"ve taught some pretty damaged kids in some rough areas.

I still speak with my former 1st grade teacher, 6th grade, and one from high school. They taught outside the box and encouraged us to do the same. They really cared and I have some of the best memories from them all. They are why I wanted to study education in college, too.

I had a couple of teachers in high school that i remember very fondly, and it was very much as you described - not because they taught me anything amazing but more the support and encouragement I got from them. One maths teacher in particular was absolutely loved by all the students who worked hard and showed interest, but hated by people who didn't care and didn't work hard. She brought out the best in some students. She has won several awards for her teaching, both provincial and national.

For me, i want to be the teacher that inspires kids and that they feel safe with. i think I succeed maybe 20-30% of the time? Administrative bullshit always seems to get in the way.

I've been reading a bunch of books about education (to prepare for homeschooling), and one of them made an interesting point about the teachers that really made a difference in our lives. It got me thinking, and I wonder if it's true for everyone or just for me.

The book said that we usually tend to remember these teachers not for the information they taught us, but for something else: for believing in us, encouraging an interest or passion, pushing us to go to college/grad school, serving as a role model, etc.

Is that true for you? What teachers really made a difference in your life, and why do you remember them so clearly?
