@LuLu Mom: I just wanted to follow up. I taught my first class in May and LOVED it. I am looking forward to volunteering again in the fall.

Such a wonderful organization! I did it in high school. We created and sold tank tops that said Miami Rice (with a rice bag pic with Miami Vice sunglasses). We packed it in a bento box. I have no idea how much we sold but being involved in the process was an eye opener to business. Not only did the experience keep me finance minded, it helped me when I was a young adult because I wanted to fundraise to buy a volleyball net for our church. So I enlisted help to design a shirt, print and sell for our net! :) Totally want to give back and provide this experience for kids. Maybe at a younger age.

@LuLu Mom: I think it's awesome you are doing this!

I'm a teacher and when I was still teaching full time at a high school my DH came as a guest speaker to some of the accounting and business classes. I could see myself doing some volunteering once LO is at school if I am still only working part time.

I taught two Junior Achievement classes - a series of maybe 10 weeks each. The first was with second graders, who were awesome. The second was with high schoolers, and while I was happy to do it (it was a school in a tough/underprivileged area, and I thought the kids actually stood to benefit and learn something), a lot of the kids were pretty rude and nasty. That part was sad, because there were a handful of students who were really attentive and interested.

JA came to my classroom in Chixago once--it was really fun. Kids pay so much attention to guests--it means a lot to them!

I do visit local schools and give presentations (usually 1-4th grades). I enjoy it, but I used to be a teacher, so it's in my comfort zone.

A little different, but DD's preschool/prek program is always having guest speakers come in to do presentations on various things. Parents will come in to talk about different subjects they are experts in, but will also arrange for outside speakers to come in as well. They even had some members of the city orchestra come in to talk about music and do a mini performance.

@Truth Bombs: I have always wanted to teach a Junior Achievement class and they don't have any in our area. I had so much fun doing it when I was a kid. What is their training like?

My company is involved with this program (Junior Achievement I assume?). I haven't had the time to get involved yet but I would love to!

I actually did a few semesters of teaching a financial management class through a local university's adult education program.

I volunteer for an local organization where I go in and teach a local kindergarten class a series about money management, wants/needs, and smart decisions. It's all part of a greater program they will follow all the way through high school. I had my first class yesterday and it is so much fun! The kindergartens are so sweet and attentive, I was so nervous but it is such a fun age!

Does anyone else volunteer at their local school or does their student's school offer outside programs come in?
