Yes, we plan to although I think my high school did a good job. Could have been more inclusive but things we're factual at least. I've been meaning to read that book for years!

@mrsjazz: good question! I really have no idea, I'll have to ask my husband. I do know though that the French have stopped white washing over the Algerian war, so that is progress. My son will be going to the French school this fall, but since we live in Austria, I am really curious as to how they approach European history. Obviously, that won't come up for at least a few years, but I will be curious to see how it's all taught (I was an international affairs major, so I definitely have an interest in history).

@mrsjazz: I'm Canadian. In my experience, we didn't get taught your history or geography at all.

@sorrycharlie: That's what I read in high school. So not all HS history is bad!

@sorrycharlie: Yeah, that book was totally eye-opening and kind of shocking for me! They have a version of it for young readers (but it's for ages 10 and up).

@mrsjazz: We had to read The People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn in grad school and it was an incredibly eye opening read. It's the true history, if you will, as opposed to high school history..

@BananaPancakes: I want my daughter to be the type of kid you were!

@lamariniere: That's interesting. I've always wondered how other countries teach history that had to do with America. Like, does France teach about their role in the Revolutionary War or is that not even a blip on the radar because France has a longer history than the U.S.

@mrsjazz: I was just thinking about this again the other day because of that book! And I plan on supplementing, but I am a big history lover and actually supplemented myself because I was so interested. I was actually kind of a pain in the ass in class because I would call things out in our textbooks.

My husband's a history teacher so will be a great resource. He already reads her historical books about the presidents and such.

I will have to teach my kids about American history since they are growing up/being educated abroad. We have already touched on certain topics as they come up with my older LO.

Will you supplement your child's education of world/national history that they learn in school?

I have no idea how they are teaching things now, guess I will learn as LO goes through school, but I remember having an awakening in college because of things I was taught in school vs. what I learned in college. Like the story of Thanksgiving. There were some other things in textbooks that were totally false, things left out. My mom supplemented some of our learning about Black history since that was lacking.

I'm thinking about this as there's controversy with Scholastic releasing a book that white-washes slavery. We buy lots of picture books about history but I make sure that these are as accurate as they can be in an age-appropriate manner.
