I second back-floating. We taught LO by starting him with his head on our shoulder, body supported by our hands, and feet out.

@brownie: the lifeguard was telling me to have her flip to her back for breaths - I'll have to work with her on that, right now she's scared of trying to back float. But she is taking in water sometimes when she's just trying to bob her head up, which is what freaks her out so backfloat probably is the best solution now.

I love the ISR technique of teaching them to roll onto their back. This is how my son learned to swim (not at ISR but that technique). I have seen it transfer to a great side breathing as they roll less and less (not my son but older kids).

YMCA encourages kids to lift their head to the front and breath. I have seen my son take in water when he tries this.

LO has been a little fishy in the pool this summer but she still mainly wears wingies.
Without wingies she can keep herself up and swim a bit over to the steps - the only problem is she panics when she has to balance swimming with taking a breath.
Anyone have good tricks for teaching a little swimmer how to take a breath while swimming?
