So many good book recommendations and resources. By educating yourself, it will help conversations to flow naturally and continue past MLK day. Learning more about MLK is a great way to have very young kids understand and get on the road to digging at the roots of racism. It is so important to teach them that treating someone as LESS than yourself is harmful and that when groups of people do it to a minority it is very, very difficult to change. <This can easily extend to sexism, classism etc. Start general and keep connecting the dots as time goes on.>

We have the book Of Thee I sing by Obama and it has a page on MLK. DD loves reading it and has a limited understanding about the civil rights era.

DD had a workbook and I pulled it out of her school folder later in the day. “Mama that’s Dr. King!” Pretty good for 3.

We talk about a few equality concepts that are age appropriate. I think she’s a bit young- but I love the idea of the books above.

Southern Poverty Law Center has a great website called Teaching Tolerance. It is geared at teachers, but there are preschool and kinder lessons on there that you might be able to adapt!

We live where the bus boycott was. MLK is a huge figure here as well as Rosa Parks. We have a historical district and museum. It taught in school a TON.

All these books are great ideas to teach this too kids. I'll have to save these ideas for later. I think you did a good idea explaining it.

Honestly, I’m not looking forward to teaching my kid about MLK and the Civil Rights movement. I feel like once you open the door that it’s hard not to see things in black vs white, us vs them no matter how well-intentioned. At least that’s how it was for me when I understood the images and stories I was presented with.

@msmilkshake: @erinbaderin: definitely will weave those books in!

Hi! I think that’s a great intro. In terms of books I really love Martin’s Big Words and March! for kids as young as 4. My son is only 18m but I teach 3rd graders and we try to talk a lot about people today who are doing work for justice in their communities. I think that’s inspiring for kids and also helps them understand that racism/injustice isn’t something that was solved with Dr. King. I also support the Books For Littles Facebook group, she has amazing book suggestions for all ages on all sorts of justice topics. And she gives great ideas about how to talk about the books with really young kiddos which I always find helpful!

We have this book, which I really like: https://www.amazon.ca/Martin-Luther-King-Jr/dp/0525428526/ref=asc_df_0525428526/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=292959357010&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7599981242554267756&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000758&hvtargid=pla-499556737837&psc=1

We actually have a whole series of them, they're adorable and a big hit with my 5 year old. We also have Rosa Parks, Helen Keller, Albert Einstein, Jane Goodall, and Amelia Earhart.

How do you or will you teach your kids about MLK jr. and civil rights?

My son is 4. I mentioned to him last night that we will be off from school and work today to honor the life of MLK. I told him he fought for what he believed in and wanted everyone to have equal rights. I don’t know how much that registered with him but I’d love others ideas on teaching our kids about anti racism, equity and civil rights .
