No brown and silver or brown and gray. Black matches with everything. Denim matches with everything. Yes to what anagram said about red and pink. I have the same problem with my DH and everyday I pick up LO is a surprise. Most times I pre-pair a top and bottom together so they don't have to do it theirself. I told LO sometimes she can find a color in the patterned top that goes with the color in the bottom -which is almost always solid.

I limit the choices when buying clothes to make matching easy for the kids. I don't buy crazy bottoms so that they can pick out whatever they want to wear on top.

I kind of agree on "meh". We let C pick her own outfits sometimes and it's inevitably something ridiculous (like a princess dress, or a billion layers of random stuff, or her swimming life jacket). We just let her wear it.

@mrbee: It sounds like his form of self expression IS crazy, right now, though! Kids just like loud things. My nephew is the same way and is all about the really over the top stuff. He also has a mohawk, so...*shrug* :)

We are in the 'crazy' phase, which I just think is fun self expression. I tend to buy interesting tops and simple (black or denim leggings, denim shorts, solid color bike shorts) bottoms, so choices are fairly simple. But I love to see what my daughter comes up with.

@Anagram: Thanks for the rules you mentioned!! Will read them carefully and start pulling together a list.

Are there any basic rules around how to use solid vs busier clothes... like if he's going to wear a really busy shirt, wear solid pants/shorts? Or something like that.

@blackbird: It's more that he really enjoys picking out his outfits! So I'm hoping to encourage his interest and give him some rough guidelines to get him started... then he can express himself all he wants!!

Meh....i mean, it doesn't sound like charlie is bothered by his fashion choices, it sounds like you are! part of the fun of being a kid is getting to be crazy and expressing your own individuality in the limited realm in which you are allowed. If you want less "crazy", i agree you have to give them less crazy to begin with, though!

Yeah when she picks her own clothes as long as it's weather appropriate I don't really care that it doesn't match or is a fashion faux pas. They're kids! I just shake my head and laugh.

@Anagram: haha my 6yr old breaks all your rules :silly:

I have tried to teach my DS about matching outfits and he does really well some days and not so well others- I say just sit down on Sunday night and pick out the week's clothes and offer suggestions along the way

The only things I can think of are to maybe limit his choices when you buy the clothes and what you make available in his closet/drawers. I dress my son very simply, you will see him in a pair of solid pants, a striped tee with long sleeves and a fleece vest in the winter. In the summer, I get a little more crazy with prints because I can not pass up a pair of madras shorts.

We are still in the crazy phase, which I think is totally cute. I just let him wear whatever he wants as long as it is weather-appropriate. He gets so excited about picking out his favorite things, even if they completely clash! Sometimes I say things like "oh look, these socks have stripes like your tee shirt" or "these two things match because they are the same color" or something along those lines to give him ideas, but that's about it.

Well, I can't say it will sink in and maybe this doesn't apply to boys, but my husband dresses my daughter in the morning and even if I lay out her clothes, he manages to pair the "wrong" socks or hair bow or shoes.

-Pink and red should never be mixed except on Valentine's day (this is his biggest offense and he tries to commit it almost daily. I sometimes wonder if he is color blind, but he says he isn't).
- if you have a color "theme" for your shirt and pants, don't throw a brand new color into the mix with socks and shoes
-don't wear holiday themed shirts on days that aren't that holiday
-don't wear long sleeves with shorts, or short sleeves with wintery pants (because one piece is going to be inappropriate for the weather unless you are layering).
-maybe don't mix prints? I actually love print mixing, but there are a lot of ways it can go wrong, I guess.

Everything else, I let him do what he wants.

My son has been dressing himself when he wakes up, which makes the morning routine so much easier! He tends to pick some kinda crazy outfits though. If it's not too crazy though, we just let him run with it.

I'd love to teach him some basic rules so he can pick out non-crazy outfits on his own. So far, the main rule I would give him would be, "you don't have to make sure the shirt and pants the exact same color."

Any other rules come to mind?
