@PinkElephant: yes, I sure will! This morning I showed him how to place his hands in his waistband so his thumb can help pull his pants up.

The new daycare room teacher told me this room is very much potty introduction. They will change the kids in the bathroom to help them make the connection and will seat them on the potty. little steps for now.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: It may be different if your LO is the oldest child in the family, but my middle DD (now 3.5) did actually learn to put on her clothes at a pretty young age, primarily because she watched her big sister do it. If you're interested in motivating your LO to learn, you could try letting him watch/hang out while you or DH are getting dressed on a regular basis, and maybe he will model what you're doing.

My sort of newly two year old is just able to pull his pants most of the way up, and not able to pull down. Only recently showing potty interest but were expecting a baby in a month and aren't really planning to potty train for awhile. My first was a bit late to potty training for a girl but trained at 2y9m and learned quickly. All this to say don't worry about it! :)

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Haha same. At that age he couldn’t do much. Now at just two he can pull of his socks basically. Haha.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: DS1 wouldn't even think about helping out with his close at this age, while DS2 who is just over 2 has been helping with it since he turned 2. He does still struggle with getting his pants down sometimes, but as he practices, he gets better at it. We try to make it more fun for him...as we help him, we say in a funny voice, "puuuuuuuull! C'mon! Use some muscle!" He cracks up and thinks it's a game which makes him want to do it more.

For shirts, teaching them to pull their shirt at the elbow and bending at the elbow while pulling their arm out has been most effective. Do that on each side, and then over their head. LO2 still needs help with the arms on occasion, but he has so much fun undressing that he usually gets it after a while.

I'll have to say that DS2 still struggles with pulling up his pants. He can't quite get them over his butt. So he'll walk around with his pants half down yelling, "naked boy!"

19 months is so young! DD1 probably started working on it after she was 2, and mastered it by 2.5 maybe. At almost 3 she can pretty much do it herself with a little help for certain things.

I’m not sure why “able to pull pants on/off” is one of those markers on the “signs your child is ready for potty training” lists because I’ve yet to encounter a 2 year old who can do this. My youngest is also 19 months and on track and while she wishes she could dress herself, there is no possible way she could. Practicing with her big sisters clothes usually leads to more successful attempts (bigger clothes are easier to get on). DD1 definitely couldn’t pull her pants up/down when she potty trained at almost 2. Also consider that he’s not going to be going to the bathroom unsupervised for a very long time (probably until close to 2.5-3) so you have until at least then for him to get the hang of it.

My 4.5 year old still will hardly dress herself! haha. But my 2 year old does dress/undress herself, which actually annoys me because it takes her a while and she gets frustrated, but she won't allow us to help. She screams if we try to do her shoes or anything. Personally, I'd rather do it myself than wait the 15 minutes it takes her to do every little thing, haha. I'm kind of glad my oldest is still a compliant little rag doll, so at least one is easy!

DS1 is 3 (38 months) and totally normal for motor function. He just recently (like in the last month) learned how to get his underwear and elastic waist sweatpants/shorts down and that's only after he mastered peeing standing up (again, another very recent milestone). He can zip up a jacket if I do the bottom, he can take off a jacket, he can put a hat on and off, he can take off socks but can't put them on, and can take off/on easy to manage shoes. He cannot take a shirt off himself and he can put his shirt on only after I put his head through the neck.

At 18 months, DS2 can take off his socks and shoes and unzip/squirm out of his sleepsack. That's about it. He can raise his arms when I take his shirt off and hand me his feet for socks and shoes.

My DS learned how to pull his pants down first, then up, a little after 2. Now at 2.5 he can take everything off, but he still can't put on a shirt, jacket, or shoes by himself. I would start with 2 piece pjs and stretchy waistbands on his pants.

@SweetiePie: Agree, I would not push a 19-month-old to dress himself and would definitely not push potty training that early (unless the kid is chomping at the bit begging to start).

My DD is 2.5 and pulls her pants up/down, and puts her pants/socks/coat/shoes/hat on independently, but that's only been consistent within the last few months.

We potty trained my first well before she could pull her pants down independently. My second is 26 months and is just starting to get her pants down herself, and only is the elastic is loose enough.

Personally, I think 19 months is way too young to expect that. DS1 is 3 and on track with all motor skills/milestones (and even ahead in some) and he still can’t put on a shirt himself. He can put on pants and pull them down (elastic waist only) but that’s a fairly new skill. Like as of 3.
It’s always been my understanding that you can encourage it but it won’t really be mastered until closer to 3.

LO is 19 months old and is helpful when it comes to getting dressed and undressed; however, he does not do this task independently. I would like for him to be able to at least pull his pants down on his own since we are a week or two away from potty training (coincides with moving to the daycare room with kiddie toilets). His PJs are still the all in one zippered kind, so I probably need to get him some two piece PJs. Please share your tips and video links to help him dress/ undress.

TIA
