Ours started on the balance bike. Then after he got the hang of the pedal bike we started by lifting the training wheels a bit off the ground so he could feel what happened when he shifted his balance. After a bit of that the training wheels came off and he just kept practicing until he got it.

@travellingbee: I think then he's ready! Just help him steady himself and he'll probably have it figured out in no time. Like I said it was less than 30 minutes for us and then he was zapping around. Just make sure he knows how he o brake.

@Pumuckl: He has a balance bike and yes he can ride it, but he isn't very interested in the balance bike. He likes to pedal.

We had her ride a balance bike a couple times to figure out the balance part. Took her to an empty parking lot, DH held the back of her seat a couple times but then she went by herself. Stopping and turning seemed like the tricky parts for her.

@travellingbee: can he ride a balance bike? Otherwise you could take the pedals off and let himmaster balancing before he tries to do it all together. B actually learnt how to ride his bike this weekend. DH and my dad helped him until he trusted himself that his feet would keep pedaling. He didn't have any issues with balance. It was around 30 minutes and he was off.
By helping I mean that they basically did what @lamariniere: described, jog next to him while stabilizing the bike. He is so proud that he can now ride the pedal bike. I'm sure L will have it mastered really quickly too.

My stubborn kid just got on and rode one day! Seriously though we watched lots of videos on YouTube and once she decided she could do it (and I knew she physically could do it) she just made the decision that she would do it! You could always try having just one training wheel for awhile.

My son was 4 when he learned, and this is what I did. We went to a nearby park that had a very flat, straight walkway. I would kind of jog along side him while he pedaled. We started with me holding on to his shoulder (lightly resting my hand, not grabbing) and I would give him tips as he was pedaling, like go faster or look in front of you or start to move your hands towards the brakes. We did that a few times and then I told him he was ready and I just jogged along next to him telling him whatever I thought he needed to hear. We did that for maybe 20 minutes and he got it. My husband did a second round the next week and he could ride pretty well after that.

My DS is 4 years old and rides his training wheels bike VERY well. He's been riding it for 2 years. I think he is ready to try without training wheels but he's a little nervous and I don't know the best approach for teaching him. Anyone make this transition and have tips?
