Team 'burbs! Even when I was young and single, the city felt overwhelming to me. I think I would feel too isolated in the country, and the work of maintaining all that farmland doesn't appeal to me at all!

We're team burbs right now and have no complaints. However, if I had a lot of money, I would move right back to the city in a heartbeat. We can't afford the same lifestyle in the city that we can in the burbs.

Team Burbs. I grew up in the Burbs and now I live in the suburbs of a different city. We had temporary housing when we moved out here and city living was just too noisy for me. DH said it would be nice to live in the city for a year. I guess i could try it out for a year, but we both have our own cars and wouldn't have it any other way. I do take public transportation but I don't think I could give up my car.

I work in the city and that's enough city life for me.

I'm team burbs for sure, if not team country!

I'd rather have acreage and horses and goats with no neighbors within sight than live in an apartment in the middle of the city. HECK NO. I love big yards and my own space.

@regberadaisy: Whoa, I'm in the minority here, but I'm team country all the way! I grew up on a dairy farm with lots of land and it was amazing!
We currently do not have a farm, but we have some cows and lots of land. It's private, and beautiful! I'm excited to raise our country kids! :)

@Jess1483: haha, I was going to say team small town? Even though most people here consider these to be big cities. I had roommates once from the Bronx and Manhattan (the one in NYC). I think they considered it completely middle of nowhere.

I like living in a small town. It's easy to get to know people, there is tons of nature right outside the town, but we have access to basic amenities like health care and airports.

@gingerbebe: My husband and I met when we lived in LA. And now we live just 10 minutes outside of DC. So I feel like you and I have mirror lives :) I'd love to be in CA again, but I don't know that we'll be able to afford it for a while. But the DC area is really pretty expensive too. I wish money grew on trees...

DH and I met when we lived in the DC metro area. I lived in an apartment 10 minutes from DC so I always felt like I was right near the city but with a little more breathing room. I think we will always have a soft spot for that town so I think we would move to that type of city-burb in a heartbeat because of the walkability and food and all that.

We live in CA now and our situation is suburban but it's a unique place. We are one town over from a major university town so that has all the cozy feels of a sleepy college town, we are 20 minutes from the state capitol, and our city is surrounded by active farmland (this year we are surrounded by sunflowers!). We are an hour from Napa, 2 hours to SF, 2 hours to Tahoe, and we live 10 minutes from our airport - which gets us to my folks in SoCal in an hour! So while we rock the strip mall suburban life, we have access to just about everything we would want.

Like @hilsy85: my stroller is my shopping cart! This will likely change once I have two kids in my stroller though...

ahhhhh sweet suburbia! i've lived my whole life in the same outer suburb of melbourne. Its not the greatest place to live in comparison to the leafy inner city $$$ suburbs, but its MY burb :D shops/groceries/public transport are close, 1/2 hour from inner city/CBD if I need to get there, full of migrants - old and new, so its an interesting place. Crime rate is higher out here (car theft/home robbery mainly), but I don't feel unsafe if I go for a walk to the shops. I can't imagine living anywhere else, but if $$ were no issue, gosh I'd love an apartment in every major city of the world!

I've always lived in the suburbs, and I really like it. I don't get the appeal of walking to the store... then you have to carry all of the bags back! Ideally, I'd love a home in the country that's not too far from the amenities of the 'burbs. Maybe even a small farm!

We live in a small beach town and it's pretty idealistic for me, personally. We have quick access to a larger city, but our town has all the crucial necessities within walking or biking distance. I love the small-town feel, hidden gems, and abundance of natural beauty, around us.

If I absolutely had to change my surroundings, I think I'd first opt for smallish city, while LO was young. The suburbs would probably be my last choice. With kids, I love having the option to walk to our chosen destination, and most suburbs are far more removed. I'd choose character and quirkiness over home size and retail chains, any day. Perhaps the right suburb would change my mind, but I've yet to come across one I'd be particularly excited about.

I have a hard time choosing between 'burbs and city. I've always lived on the outside of big cities with an insatiable thirst to move to the city. When DH and I were engaged I told him I wanted to live in NYC - but we couldn't afford it. I would LOVE to live in the heart of NYC, but I think having a midwest background, I could never get over the sticker shock. What I'd want in a home would not be attainable for me - so I know I'd compromise by moving to Long Island - where I lived (and loved it!) when I was in NY.

Now back in the midwest, I live in the 'burbs, and it's okay. While I do bike around town, most of the time I have to drive and that's annoying. BUT I also hate biking in the city because it's so busy and I've never felt safe biking with LO in the city. I live in an apartment - so having space and a yard isn't something I have just because I'm in the 'burbs. It's not my ideal, but I can't afford a house right now... A lot of the homes in the town I live in are very cookie cutter and there are so many developments with little character - I've never wanted that really.

So I'm not really sure yet where we'll end up. My best friend ended up moving to the city and I love visiting her. But there are definite drawbacks to the city. Although, the city here is not nearly as expensive as NYC (though daycare is one of the highest in the nation in my state in the cities).

I grew up in the country but have lived in Manhattan for the last 8 years. I'm fine with the city until LO is school age and then we are moving to suburbs.
I loooove the country and going back to visit but I do feel I missed out on a lot of opportunities and I don't think I'd enjoy being back permanently.
I think the suburbs is a nice balance. OR a small city. (I lived in Pittsburgh proper for a while and loved it! Conveniences of city but small town feel).

I've lived in all of them and I like suburbs the least. Right now we're in the city but it basically looks like suburbs, just very close to all the benefits of a big city- parks, zoo, museums theaters, shopping etc. I'd prefer to live in a smaller city, and I looooove the country (small town country) but probably couldn't really go back to that. I'd miss all the amenities...

@regberadaisy: I remember that @Mrs. Twine: wrote a blog post about living on a farm. http://www.hellobee.com/2013/04/26/farm-livin/ She would be perfect for writing the third installment of this "series".

I think I could be happy on both team city and team suburb. Right now, I LOVE where we live now. On the outskirts of a mid-size city. Technically the suburbs, but a 5 minute drive to the heart of the city.

Team city - we live in the 'burbs now, and it has it's pros, but if we could plop our house down in the city, we would do so in a heartbeat. I miss being able to walk to dinner, out for coffee, etc. I love driving, but not to go absolutely anywhere. Neither my husband or I would ever live out in the country!

I'm a city girl through and through. We live in a suburb now, and it seems like such a small town-- even "downtown." DH and I already talk about getting a condo back in the center of the city when our daughters leave home.
