@hilsy85: She wasn't gaining any weight was our first indication. When we first offered her formula she drank 6 ozs like it was going out of style.

@hilsy85: @Tidybee: sounds like our babies are all up to the same trick, Miss A hit sixteen weeks last Tuesday and has turned into a total fusspot this week.

We seem to be having a partial nursing strike going on and some days she'll only feed lying down and on Wednesday Miss A had a terrible day with teething and was just miserable!

FWIW I have read that babies do tend to go through a fussy stage with feeding at around four months so here's hoping it passes soon!

It does sound like gas. We went through BF issues at around this age. LO would nurse for about 5 minutes and then just scream and fuss and flail (sp?). We battled that for the longest time. Finally I realized LO wasn't getting enough from me and at that point we started supplementing with formula and it was a complete 180.

they are definitely soulmates! I do the gas drops maybe twice a day when she's definitely in pain. I do see a huge difference though. We've been dealing with gas issues since she was born and I gave up dairy.
C is also grunting and groaning on the boob. My mom said I got my first tooth at 4 months, so I don't think it is out of the question...

Shocking news - C is doing something similar. I think it's gas. Sometimes she farts, sometimes she doesn't. According to my wonder week app, they have a succession of wonder weeks from 14-19, and it seems like her fussiness started right along with that. I've been doing gripe water and gas drops. I've found the gripe water makes her poop a ton, so I don't like to do it more than once a day.

I've been trying bicycle legs and sometimes he passes some gas, but it doesn't seem to relieve his discomfort :( It's making me so sad and upset that I can't help him!

@cascademom: I would be ok with it if he were smiling/cooing/interacting with me...but he's whining and looks so uncomfortable :( I thought that there was some distracted nursing starting a few weeks ago, so I started nursing him mainly in his nursery where it's quiet. I do hope that he's efficient enough to get enough to eat in the short time he's on the boob!

@plantains: yay! That is good to hear...I feel like LO was so smiley and happy just a week and a half ago, and now he's a fussbucket :( it makes me feel unreasonably guilty, like I'm doing something wrong to make him act this way! Ahh mommy guilt...

@hilsy85: @MsLipGloss: totally agree with everything MsLipGloss said about weeks 16-19. It was just an odd time for L. She was a bit fussy, sleep got a bit funky and just generally a bit tiring. But around week 21 or so my easy going extremely mellow baby reappeared.

Sounds like there's some early teething in there, sleep regression, etc. I remember 4 months being a tough period. With the latching and unlatching, he's probably more aware of his surroundings and you. My LO loves to flirt with me on the boob. At the rate he's going, he's going to be a little ladies man. By this time, babies are more efficient eaters even with the playing around.

@Hilsy85: It's like a growth spurt for the brain . . . and I think weeks 16-19 are a window for wonder weeks. You may find your little guy fussier, more distracted, disrupted sleep, etc. during this time.

I don't know about you, but right before 16 weeks, I felt like I had just gotten a handle on things with my LO (she is 5 months now). And then it went to hell in a handbasket at 16 weeks!

@MsLipGloss: ooh tell me more about this wonder week! I keep seeing the name and know the general concept, but do you know what it actually means for wk 16? And we have the little tummies drops and I used them for the first time yesterday. They didn't really seem to help, but maybe I should start using them multiple times a day? And eek, I hope it's not thrush...I don't see any white patches in his mouth!

@plantains: I was initially worried about his intake, esp that it would cause my supply to drop...he seems to be having enough wet diapers though? Will try the bicycle legs after his bath tonight, thanks! :)

@regberadaisy: thanks! Will try that method...I hope it's not boob refusal! Did she just grow out of it/eventually go back to the boob?

@hilsy85: your diet may not have changed but you could have eaten one new item that can cause him gassiness. The list of things is ridiculously long! The other thing to try is putting him over your leg and try rubbing his back. This seemed to help too wiht M's gassiness when she was younger when bicycle did not.
OR he can simply be going through a boob refusal phase! M did that twice for a week each. it was so frustrating!
