@Foodnerd81: @Mrs. Lion: I know it breaks my heart. Poor girl. She was totally fine and normal otherwise. I guess she has a high tolerance for pain.

@Smurfette: oh poor R!! That happened to me when I was 21, actually, and it was pretty awful- and disgusting. Though I will say the moment I felt the ear drum burst was a really gross relief. Hope she feels much better soon.

@Foodnerd81: glad you took her. R just had her ear drum burst, again, cause she shows no sign of an ear infection. The first time she slept great as normal. This time she was waking up, but we thought it was cause she had a cold. Didn't know it was an ear infection, till we saw drainage from the drum bursting. Poor girl!

@catomd00: thanks for the input, it definitely wasn't as bad as you say. Poor babies.

I did go to the ped just to be sure, and they said there is a little fluid in her was but no infection. Just teething and cold and 15 month sleep regression rolled into one fun week. I'm glad I went though, for peace of mind, and they had good advice for soothing her. C did NOT like having her ears checked!

You'll know when it's an ear infection. My DD was miserable all day long and all she wanted to do was sleep and be held when she had an ear infection. Teething is usually only bad at night, because during the day you can distract them! There's no distracting them during the day with an ear infection.

Also, most ear infections will clear up on their own, so there isn't any harm in giving it a few days to see if it gets better on it's own, but also no harm in having her get an ear check if you're concerned. Follow your gut - you know your child best!

Most likely teething - teething can put pressure on the ears. Are you giving her meds?

My son never had fever with an ear infection. But if he was congested with a runny nose he almost always got an infection. This includes times when he was teething. Another sign was he cried when you tried to lay him down and he would try to get up.

I would go get checked out. But I'm one of those parents who doesn't mind taking them to the doctor. I'd rather know they are ok.

Teething is always accompanied with a lot of drool (as in, we put a bandana bib on all day!) and insane amounts of chewing. Teething actually doesn't affect her sleep. Not sure about ear infections, AFAIK she hasn't had one.

Hope C feels better soon

My son usually gets an ear infection following a cold, has to do with the ear tubes getting all clogged up with the mucus.

@Foodnerd81: when it comes to my baby being in pain I'm in the camp of better to get it checked out, within reason of course. Ear checks are super easy and I can almost always get an appointment within an hour at my ped. I would give them a call ♡

@lawbee11: it's next week. I'm hoping she will be healthier before all the shots!

@Mrs. Lion: yeah she only had that one low fever, which even this crazy first time mom knows wasn't that concerning. But my mom tells me I had recurring ear infections as a kid and never got a fever with them- like I was one infection away from tubes in my ears but not once did a spike a fever. So I worry that could be the case for c too.

I'll probably call the ped again today and jut have them check her ears just in case.

It could be either. Does she have her 15-month checkup soon? I'd want to get her ears checked just in case. When M had all those ear infections most of the time I had no idea until the ped diagnosed it.

Usually I go by fever...if there is a fever (not just like 99 but a higher fever) I go to the ped. I did take LO this week though because he was all out of sorts and not sleeping and meds weren't helping. Turned out to be nothing, but I would rather be sure instead of wondering all night long if he is really in pain. a $10 copay beats an emergency room visit any day.

How can you tell if your LO has an ear infection or teething?

C has been out of sorts for a week or so. And I know she is getting her molars in. But a couple of nights she has woken up around 10:30 and won't go back to sleep for hours (she's been STTN for several months). She can be soothed and seems to try to fall asleep on me or in bed with me, but she can't, but when I bring her near her crib she freaks out and screams and cries. It's so sad. Eventually I have to leave her in the crib and she cries for five minutes then falls asleep.

She also has been wanting to nurse way more than usual. She had a very low fever last week that went away (100.8). Called the nurse at our ped and she didn't think it was an ear inception from talking to me but basically said wait and see.

Do you think it's more likely from the teething, or could it be ear infection? I want to help the poor kiddo- plus I want to sleep!
