@muffinsmuffins: I was coming to suggest a similar thing. My brother has given his kids old phones when they've gotten new ones. They simply don't have calling plans.

I don't think they've done anything with SIM cards...

This article has good steps. http://bosorganization.com/ultimateguideiphonetoipodtouch/

I know a lot of people purchase used iPhones for this purpose and just don't use a SIM card in it if you only want it for music and apps. You do have to set it up by inserting a sim but I've used an old iPhone or android one and then removed it after its set up. A secondhand iPhone 4 or 5 would run between $50-100 depending on condition and storage.

I would also look into buying a case. The screens can break just like an iPhone.

Thats a great idea if he just wants to listen to music!

No you dont need a data plan.
You should be able to either buy and download music or you can have listening apps like pandora or amazon music etc.
Yes they connect to wifi
Music can take up a good amount of space but also if he plans to have any apps or games it probably is worth it to just get the higher storage amount.
Yes, I would imagine you can find some good deals around the holidays. You also may be able to get one used if you have a craigslist or Facebook sell group. They are really easy to refresh and have it be like new.

What can you guys tell me about an iPod

My 9 yr old asked for an iPhone so he could listen to music - So I looked into the iPod a little

Do you need a data plan?
Do you download and own the music?
If you're at home on wifi can you access the internet?
32GB or 128GB? Seems odd there isnt something in between -
Are these normally a Black Friday deal?

Anything else I should know?

Thanks!
