@justjules: oh awesome! I’m not super familiar with JC in general but I do know that’s a great area. Congrats! You missed the heat and you’ll be here for one of the best time of year...FALL! If you want a treat, head to Hoboken in Halloween. There is a great parade, and Bloomfield and garden st (and a few other blocks) uptown do an amazing trick or treat.

Oh for myself, I have a long lined wool coat for cold but not super cold days (like 40), and I have a long super fat duffle coat for the really cold days, and it has the fur lined hood.

My husband takes public transport to work and grew up in a tropical country, so he wears long johns under his work clothes all winter. He's even found some waterproof dress shoes--they look like black dress shoes but are fully waterproof for the slushy/rainy days. Sometimes he wears winter boots and keeps dress shoes in his office, but typically he just wears the waterproof dress shoes. For outerwear, he had everything from the standard rain trench to the standard 3/4 wool overcoat, but he also has some true heavy duty winter coats too that he'll wear on the super cold days.

@justjules: we live near you and I have two kids that walk all over town in all weather (to and from school at the.m very least).

I actually buy really cheap stuff for the most part and it's always been fine. I don't actually think NYC has bad winters--at least not the last few. We'll see this year. But I am in a couple local buy/sell group and buy used when I can (that was my NY resolution--to cut down in my own landfill contributions), but I've also found random finds at places like Aldi. I found both snow boots and rain boots at Aldi and random times when I popped in. I also buy end of season sales for the next winter--I picked up some cute winter coats last March from Macy's for this winter.

My oldest is pretty skinny so she's been able to wear the same snow pants for the past 3 years, and they were hand me downs from our Canada cousins. Other then that, we just pick up gloves and hats at Target or wherever I see them.

I have seen some more pricey lines for kids (snow and rain boots) at discount store like Last Call NM or Off Saks in Paramus, but even discounted they were more expensive than Aldi, lol. I have Sperry duck boots that I got at one of those outlet stores, and I wear them in snow and rain.

My husband has a variety of coats for various weather conditions, and he's also gotten them mainly from end of season sales or Black Friday sales. Speaking of which--Black friday is a great time to buy. Sometimes we have a snow in November, but it's not super common, so a lot of things can wait till then.

When we had a stroller bunting, I had a JJcole Polar and it was great. But now that the girls are 3 and 5, we don't use stroller buntings.

Hamilton Park is a great area--enjoy!

@justjules: looks like it- its fitted around the bottom of the stroller with venting at the upper back, so it creates a snug little cocoon. check on amazon for last season polarn o pyret stuff- i've recently gotten good deals there on mittens and wool clothing. and I stalk kidizen for the brands/sizes I'm looking for.

@Alba4: good thought about the puffy coat and car coat.
@RonjaL7: thanks for the links! Looking into all them now!
@periwinklebee: we have a MB duet so hopefully it’s ok in the snow. I only have pushed it in sunny Houston
@lioneyes: great! I’m adding that for a Christmas gift!
@Silva: thanks for all the recs! Going to look them up! I’ve also been looking at weather shields- we have a Mountain Buggy duet and I was going to buy a rain cover. Is the bob weather shield similar?

Welcome! I hope you’ve gotten settled well! I think I walked you a while back about moving to the area? I can’t recall!

Anyway:
Stroller: 7 am bunting and muffs (the hand muffs are crucial). I find with the buntings serious winter gear is less important except for playing outside
Shoes: I like the sperry duck boots and uggs new water proof boots (not the suede typical uggs)
For kids I like bogs boots, hunters, lands end snow separates, Patagonia down sweaters (they also last through multiple kids). I buy a lot of my winter gear for kids on my local mom group. If you moved where you discussed moving before, walll me and I’ll tell you about the local mom FB group. Polarn o pyret maies serious outdoor gear. I like lands end also. Ll bean makes great
Winter gloves that stay on

For me: my trusty j crew hooded down belted parka has been around for 5 years! I also like marmot.

If you are in NJ they aren’t that good about shoveling like they are in Manhattan so some tall rain boots are essential for nagiating slushy puddles.

We have a jogging stroller which makes navigating the snow much better.

Wall me if you have location specific questions!

We don't live in a city, so we drive most places in the winter, but we are outside a LOT. This is what we generally use. Its an investment but being comfortable outside in all weather is worth it. I shop end of season sales and buy big, and look for used whenever I can.

For me: Marmot down coat (mine is mid calf length) for every day, a soft shell jacket for active stuff (this is nice because I can layer in different ways depending on the temperature, and shed layers when I got hot.
bogs boots (they are not the most lightweight or fashionable but they keep me dry and warm like nothing else has). LLBean mittens. I wear a Skiida hat because its a local brand, but fleece lined hats are good- i have a smartwool one i like too. I wear Darntough wool socks all winter

Kids: Bog boots once they are solid walkers (the soles are heavy, but again, warm and dry feet to -30. I have been getting LLBean snowpants and coats lately, but there are a lot of quality brands. I really like Polarn o Pyret for water proof, long cuffed mittens. We wear wool long base layers underneath shirts (and sometimes pants) on very cold days, and wool socks (polarn o pyret has great wool socks for kids- including ones with grippers).

We use an llbean foot muff on the stroller, and a weather shield over our double or single Bob stroller to extend our walking/jogging season. The weather shield is awesome- my kids stay warm in shockingly cold temps and it blocks the wind.

7am enfant 212 evolution stroller bunting is amazing for both kids. When DS went to a program with no outdoor time, we would zip him into that with no coat, now that they do go out, we leave it open at the top for the walk to school.

Get yourself their warmmuffs too (gloves that attach to the stroller)

I will also add that having a jogging stroller with big wheels and suspension was a lifesaver for us last winter. Sidewalks are often poorly plowed and would have been difficult to navigate with a regular stroller.

We've inherited all of our baby clothes as hand me downs, mostly northface stuff for winter attire. It works well but no idea if there are more cost effective options.

I get my kids these 1 piece snowsuits for daycare (they prefer that).

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0195XQN76/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

With these boots

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E0NL5U2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Then I get them each a Carhartt winter hat.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KMY6JCW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I haven't really found water proof mittens I really like yet.

I’d get a puffy warm down coat for strollers as well as a slim primaloft coat for the car. I’ve gotten North Face puffy jackets and the ones from the Gap (Gap always has sales).

I like the brands Tundra or Kamik for boots and they seem to keep the kids’ feet warm and dry.

Fleece lined hats are great and necessary. I always buy at least 2 hats per kid so it’s not a scramble to find things. I buy a lot of pairs of mittens as well. They never stay on nor do they ever stay dry. I usually buy from the Gap using my points.

I left NYC before kids, but I remember the crazy slushy puddles at every intersection very well. I lived on the UWS and in Astoria. The UWS streets were always cleared of snow, but Astoria was a crap shoot. It would have been a nightmare with a stroller. Winter/spring is super messy and you definitely want quality rain boots as well (Hunter or bogs). Sorel is a great brand for womens boots.

I’m from the northeast but my kids have only lived in Houston so far so I have no cold weather gear for them! We just relocated to the NYC area so I have to start thinking of what to buy for them!
DS-almost 3
DD- almost 1.5

I’m looking for recommendations for coats, boats, stroller muffs, and even good walking winter boots for me and DH since we are going to be doing lots of walking even in winter.

Thanks guys!
