@Anagram: I'm sorry I'm just seeing this, I haven't been on in a few days! His hives cleared up around Tuesday. I feel like the steroids did a world of wonder for him. I'm so sorry you're still dealing with them. His ped did say he could have them for up to 4 weeks.

@Jackiedavis87: just curious, what antihistamine is he on now? I'm sure it's totally different from an adult female, but I've been prescribed hydroxyzine....it makes me super sleepy, so I only take it at night, although my dosage was for 3x daily.

@wrkbrk: me and my SIL were just discussing how DS rarely gets sick but when he does, it's always the worst of whatever it is 😕😑lol. Thanks twin mama!

So update, we went back to the ped today and saw his normal doctor. He has erythema multiforme minor. Essentially hives on steroids(pun intended 😝) it's usually caused by a virus and can last usually 7-10 days but up to 4 weeks. I'm to continue with the steroids and he prescribed a different antihistamine. Apparently a good indicator of these "hives" are that benadryl has no effect on them. Also the purple streaking his skin is doing(and why we took him to the ER)is actually tiny bruises the spots are leaving under his skin :bummed: I'm just happy to have finally got a clear diagnosis, and a different antihistamine! Thank you all so much!

@Anagram: Last summer I had a total body case of hives that lasted for five weeks! It was so miserable. Over the first two weeks, I was treated with multiple antihistamines, steroids, etc. and nothing helped. We couldn't definitively determine the cause, but decided the best guess was a photoallergic reaction since I'd spent a day at the pool right before and recently had taken an antibiotic. I looked like a freak (they were even on my face), but I couldn't stay home for five whole weeks, obviously!

@Anagram: i've been diagnosed with chronic urticaria as an adult. I have hives that come and go-- and last a couple days up to a couple weeks. I've been told by multiple allergists to take 20mg zyrtec (cetirizine) twice a day, Zantac twice a day. I also take a couple other RX for hives but generally start with those 2 meds.

@Jackiedavis87: Well, this is crazy because I just came here to post about hives....ON ME. I've never had hives in my life and now I have a bad case all over my back and now seems to be spreading to my front. I can't see my scalp under my hair, but I'm sure they are there too because my scalp is intensely itchy.

I went to an urgent care yesterday because my first thought was bed bugs (IDK why, but I guess because we were in a hotel two weeks ago and these came right after that trip?), but the DR said it's hives. I haven't changed any products and haven't eaten anything new. He gave me a steroid and antihistamine prescription and today is day 2, and there's no visual difference. *maybe* I'm less itchy? But they seem to be spreading.

Hives suck.

Sounds like you've got a good plan, but beware oatmeal baths, especially if the new aveeno lotion was oatmeal! My DH is allergic to oatmeal baths and oatmeal lotion and oatmeal soap, yet he can eat oatmeal without a reaction. He actually gets full body hives if he uses oatmeal soap! Good luck! Keep us posted!

@Jackiedavis87: no experience myself, but my friend's almost 2 year old son just had a case of viral hives. He ended up with a fever and puss on his throat but tested negative for strep. They had to give him Benadryl for the hives and a fever reducer for the fever and ride it out. It took about a week for him to be back to his normal self. I hope your regular pediatrician can give you answers!

@SproutBee: thank you so much! Yes they come and go, one second his face is clear and then literally within a minute it's full, 2 hours later clear again. His whole body is like that. Viral yuck! :bummed: I don't know if that makes me feel better or worst lol. Well we're just going to keep doing what we're doing, and I'm going to get DH to grab that soap ms.rv was talking about, and if he's not looking any better in the morning, back to the ped we go. At least They haven't seem to affected his attitude, only when he's itchy.

@Jackiedavis87: ok, thanks for the added pics. Do the rashes tend to come and go? It does look more "hivey" in those new pics. The most common reason for hives in little ones is viral, even if there's no fever. Based on those new pics, I'd say the differential is viral induced hives vs nonspecific viral rash. Whomp whomp. Not exciting, but also not dangerous. My little one had a similar rash around that age - I can try to post pics. I never took him in bc I figured it was viral. Was gone in about a week.

I would just keep supporting him like you've been doing, frequent oatmeal baths. Stilll get him checked out tomorrow since I don't think you've been given reassurance this far. And hang in there! You're doing great!

@SproutBee: it's interesting that y'all keep saying that because my MIL keeps asking me over and over if they were sure it was hives. I have a better picture. To me they're pretty red, but they may look extra red in that light.

@DesertDreams88: it's funny you say that about the pajamas because I've been toting him around naked everywhere! He went naked to the er, naked to the doctor lol I didn't want to put clothes on him and have it be bothering him worst than the rash already was. Both the NP and er doctor, had no doubt that it was hives, and it does look like what I've looked at on google. They stay red like that untill the benedryl kicks in then the color tones down a lot. I've seen that particular NP several times before and have never had Problem, I'm wondering if she just didn't realize what she said and was going by his age. Benedryl seems to be one of those taboo medicines. The bottle I bought yesterday says DO NOT GIVE to a child under 5, I'm going to assume it's just for liability reasons.

@SweetiePie: he loves oatmeal! Sometimes it's all I can get him to eat lol. The strange thing is that I regularly use the aveeno calming lavender lotion on him, it I couldn't find it Thursday night, so I just grabbed what was close by, and that was aveeno 24hr sheer moustire lotion. I compared the 2 today and that one has 2x the amount of ingredients as the lavender one does.

I'm a general pediatrician and let me first admit it's incredibly difficult to diagnose "virtually". The pic you posted is a little blurry, but my first reaction when I see it is that it's not hives. I would def get him checked out by your regular pediatrician Monday morning for confirmation. I don't trust ER docs to diagnose pediatric rashes, unless it's a pediatric ER doc.

Oh no, poor baby! That does look really bad. Was the ER doctor sure it was hives, too? Did they do any testing to rule out infection? Maybe hives look smaller on children, but when I got hives, they were the size of quarters, and not that red. I am amazed about that nurse practitioner gave you that dosage guidelines Benadryl. That's not even what it says on the bottle! Oatmeal bath only have oatmeal on them, I'm pretty sure, baking soda is a great addition to. When LO got hand foot mouth, we turned up the air conditioning and dressed him in long sleeve pajamas because I couldn't bear to see the rash.

@Jackiedavis87: has he eaten oatmeal before? I know for me, I have a soy allergy, so if I eat it or use a body product with it (actually aveeno soy product) I get a reaction. Eating it is itchiness in the mouth and vomiting. Skin is a rash.
Anyway i guess I'm saying maybe if he has eaten oatmeal with no reaction it's not the oatmeal in the lotion that bothered him?
Did it have any scent like lavender?

I recently had a skin rash all over my body. It was itchy and horrendous and my derm said it was stress related (I was coming off of a 2nd failed IVF round). She recommended cerave cream and oatmeal bath.
For the oatmeal bath I filled an old stocking with oats and tossed it in the tub while the water ran. It acts like a tea bag and keeps your drain from clogging up with oats. I then squeezed it a bunch into the water and you can even use the stocking filled with oatmeal like a loofa. I rubbed it all over me.
Rinse well after because it does leave a film.
