@maddyz: thanks. I'm having a procedure kind of similar to a D&C and my dr. mentioned the anesthesia recovery possibly being harder than the surgery -- though I find this hard to believe. Guess I'll learn.

@Charm54: thank you! I have complete faith in my doctors but I am a big hypochondriac. My doctor has asked me to stop Googling (ha!) but I can't help it. I figure this doesn't count.

@sunnyday: I hope they give me that stuff, too. I remember being in the room when my mom woke up from anesthesia and she was puking.

I was just coming on to link to the book!!

My son had surgery in January (at 20m) and he loves this book for his memories, especially in the operating room. My older one (3.5) talks about my knee surgery and how I went to the hospital like DS. They loooooove this book right now, it's so long, lol.

Eta. I have been under anesthesia what feels like to be 80 million times (at least 10?) and love it. I think counting down until under is the best! I used to wake up pretty sick from it, but now they give me special stuff and I wake feeling like a million bucks.

I had my gall bladder out a couple months ago, but it was an emergency surgery so there was no time to really prepare DD. DH told her mommy needed to stay in the hospital for a couple nights and when I came home she would have to be careful with my belly.

She stayed with my parents for the first few days until I was more mobile. That was really helpful. she was pretty good at being careful. The hardest part was she wanted me to run and play and chase her and didn't understand that I couldn't do it yet.

Good luck! Hope you have a speedy recovery. I was really nervous too, but I had excellent doctors and nurses and healed relatively quickly.

I had two surgeries as a child. You should absolutely tell her about it. There are a lot of books about it and I know my mom read me a ton. I remember one was a Sesame Street one. I'll try and like some of the books. I would make it sound super exciting and fun. I would also let her bring her favorite stuffed animal. Now here's the bad news- I puked a lot after waking up from the anesthesia. Puking is totally normal side affect but not everyone does it.

If you're daughter would like to hear more about my experience I would be happy to talk to her.

I think it's important to say something because kids pick up on your worry and if it's not addressed it can be hard for them to have space to process.

I've been under general anesthesia twice, once for wisdom teeth, I didn't think much of it at the time, and I am not sure I even realized that was what was going to happen until I was at the appointment. Most recently was for my D&C and I think that the recovery from the anesthesia was harder than the D&C, I was pretty out of it for a day or so. They did a really good job of holding my hand as I went out and I woke up in the room I had waited for surgery in with someone there. Both of those things made it a lot less scary.

Good luck!

@Mrs. Goose: thanks. Last time I was in the hospital and we planned not to say anything but they kept me overnight so we had to say something since I wasn't going to be there in the morning. Yeah, I think because I said "Mommy was sick" it made her very sad so I like the thing about the doctor fixing me up to make me better. Thanks!

@mrsjazz: I have only been put under for wisdom teeth removal and had a spinal (but was awake) for an unplanned c section. I was more freaked out for the wisdom teeth surgery than the c section, haha! So I have no tips for that... Only, I woke up and I was in a recovery room with less teeth and it was a weird experience. I do remember thinking to myself what if I die and crying briefly before they put me under.

For your daughter I would try and downplay the severity and not go into too many details. Just say the doctor is going to fix you up or make you better. Maybe don't use terminology like "sick". It will be easier for her not to be scared of you are only away for a short time I imagine.

Dr. Google mostly assures me that I won't die -- but of course there are always the warnings. I've never been under general anesthesia before and the closer I get to it the more nervous I get. Like writing a will nervous (okay that should've been finished ages ago but at least we're doing it now).

Also wondering how to talk to my LO about surgery. Was thinking of not mentioning anything because I'm only going to be in the hospital for surgery and recovery is just a week at home but I feel like we should say something.

She's 4. She hates when I get needles and is sensitive to mommy being sick.
