Just an update from how everything went... The appointment went well and the Dr released her lip tie. He said she might have had a mild tongue tie but her range of motion seemed good and he did not think it needed fixed. By the time he did the lip release she was very hungry and upset from that. He did the release in the room with us there and then I did get to nurse her right away. She nursed well and has been doing great with that since. I'm doing my best to keep up with the stretches and she seems to be okay with that too. We follow up with my lactation consultant next week.

Thanks for all of your advice, ladies! :)

@hilsy85: this was our experience for the procedure. It was extremely quick. Unfortunately for me, I still had a lot of pain for weeks after.

@Portboston: @hilsy85: @Alba4: Thanks! Our lactation consultant that referred us did say that she needs her tongue evaluated as well. She said she wasn't sure that her side to side range of motion was correct. I'm glad to hear the procedure was quick. I am not sure if the Dr uses a laser or not but he is one of the only experienced Drs around that does lip ties. How were the stretches afterwards for your LOs? Did they cause a lot of pain when you did them?

The procedure literally takes 30 seconds. Our ENT used a knife I think (definitely not a laser). I was very nervous and emotional, but in hindsight it was really nothing to be too worried about. I was encouraged to nurse him immediately.

We did the stretching exercises for about a week-10 days afterwards.

Good luck!

I think it's almost unheard of to have a lip tie without also having a posterior tongue tie. The procedure took about 5 seconds, and LO cried for about a minute. They prob want her to be hungry so that you can nurse right after, both to check that the latch is better and because breastmilk has healing properties for the place where the ties were cut. We had zero pain or discomfort after (DD had it done at 5 days old, DS at 2 weeks old).

Make sure you do the stretching exercises after so the tongue tie does not reattach.

We had a tongue and lip tie lasered when DS was 5 weeks old. It was super easy. Appointment took about a half hour total. The actual procedure was less then 5 minutes. They had to take LO out of the room to do it because of the laser.
I would say feed right before you go. You'll be able to feed LO within 30 min of your appt time. So it shouldn't be longer then 2 hours between feeds. The milk will help soothe the tie area and give comfort of course.
Our ENT told us that 90% of babies with lip ties have tongue ties as well.

Tomorrow afternoon we are taking DD2 to an ENT Dr to get a lip tie fixed & evaluate her tongue as well.

What was the appointment like? Did it take a long time? They told me she should be hungry for the appointment... Like hungry right at the appointment time? We have to drive 1.5 hrs to the Dr so timing has me a little worried with feedings.
