DS1 got a HORRIBLE case of hand food mouth when DS2 was born. We literally kept the BABY quarantined in the master bedroom for over 3 weeks. Our pediatrician told us that we needed to keep the baby away for a week AFTER the scabs started peeling to make double sure the baby didn't get sick. I Lysoled everything, my hands were cracked and peeling from washing, and I made DH handle most of DS1's care. It was awful and DH ended up getting HMF from DS1, but neither I nor the baby got it. We just held the baby up from a distance and said hi and then would run him back into the room.

Personally, I would not nurse both my kids at the same time if the older was sick, but that's my preference.

When DD1 was sick with DD2 being a newborn, I remember we did separate them a lot. I nursed DD2 and she was totally fine.

We did not let my older kid touch the baby unless she was wearing her mitts. Also, breastfeeding is awesome. Our whole family got the stomach flu and it missed the baby!

My second was born in January and it wasn’t a problem for us. He didn’t get sick much until he was about 9m (and from then he was sick all the time and eventually did get rsv by his bday ... but early on it was fine). My kids actually rarely get the same illnesses even now which I always find weird since they’re home together a lot.

My son (3 at the time) had back-to-back illnesses, including a 106 degree fever, when his sister was 2-3 weeks old. She didn't get sick!

I’ll be honest and say we didn’t successfully keep LO2 healthy. My LO1 was the sickest he’s even been when LO2 was born - just a string of crazy illnesses.. Sending good thoughts. We had the most luck when we discovered Wet Ones antibacterial hand wipes (available on Amazon in a 10 pack via prime) - it was so much easier to just wipe his hands down when he coughed, etc. I also sometimes wore a robe when I was around LO2 and took it off around LO1, but I was admittedly nuts about trying to not cross contaminate germs.

My second got sick within a few weeks and my third is 2 months and just switched to all formula but we did avoid one cold and hopefully the stomach bug the older two had. Omg the sanitizing.. misery. My second was hospitalized with some kind of virus/cold because of a fever and it was mostly just inconvenient, he was fine. I have been nervous this time with my dec baby and terrible flu season and two older kids who we kept home as much as possible but the older one is in school. It sucks but we will all get through!

DS1 and DS2 both had norovirus when DS3 was 1-2 weeks old. I was terrified. Somehow, both DS3 and I escaped unscathed.

I think breastfeeding (and lots of prayer haha) helps a ton!

My 2.5 year old got croup when DD was like 2 weeks old and she didn't get it. He also got a random mystery fever thing when she was a month old and she never got it either. I think BFing helps a lot.

I had a very sick 8 year old, 3 year old, grandma, and nanny when I came home from the hospiral with LO3 ughhhh~~ I literally quarantined myself in my bedroom with LO3, and DH/my mom/the nanny took care of the 2 older ones. LO3 has not been sick (knock on wood)!

My 2.5 year old got sick so often after baby sister was born! And I won’t lie and say the baby never got sick, but it was always much milder than big sis. The worst was a stomach bug that went through the house but missed the baby! I think nursing helps a lot in this particular situation. I also think it’s inevitable that second babies get more germs than your first would have but hopefully t won’t be bad! I’m sure your precautions will help.

No ideas, but following... my son will be 2y8m when baby brother arrives in May and he has the daycare crud nonstop and I'm very nervous about this. It seems like a recipe for disaster.

My 2-yr-old son is starting to come down with a bad, scratchy / wet cough. No other symptoms yet but it just started yesterday. My newborn is literally only 8 days old. My son had been kissing her (on the mouth!) and holding her and let out a couple of coughs around her, but now that it's worse, we'll try to keep them in separate rooms as much as possible. But grandma is here from across the country and obvi wants to see them both. We're also going to push water intake, juice, liquid vitamins, etc. DH bought some kid-friendly cough suppressant options today, I think (he isn't home yet). Also, I nurse them both. Which, I think will help in this scenario? I'll try washing afterward with soap and water.

Please tell me about how your older child got sick but your very-young newborn didn't! I need some encouragement. All I can think of is RSV at 8-days-old.....
