I've had the Paragard for about a year, and I would definitely recommend it. I had some spotting for a couple weeks after insertion, and my period is heavier for about a day, but no other side effects or issues at all. My OB told me also she uses it
ETA: My sister has used it for years and also is a fan. She conceived on her 1st and 2nd try when it was removed, too.

I've had a copper iud for a bit over a year. The first 6 months I had very long, heavy periods. After 6 months, they started to be a bit more regular, but the heaviest days are still really heavy. I've never had the cramping that others seem to experience. I love that I don't have to remember to take a pill and love that it is hormone free.

I had a paraguard before having children, and it was a painful, heavy period hell. I've heard conflicting opinion about whether or not you'll have a different experience after having a baby, but I won't try one again.

I had a mirena and I would not get it again. I have a pretty small uterus and it ended up partially expelled. Most people have been very happy with it though. If I were in the market for a hormonal birth control gain I might consider the Skyla which is like mirena but smaller and I believe you use it for 3 years instead of 5.

Got mirena about 3 months ago. Having it put in was incredibly painful and I was in pretty intense pain for about 8 hours. Once I recovered from that I've had no issues and I have had only one super light period. I'll keep this one but I don't think I'll get another.

I had a Mirena for 2.5 years after LO was born. I loved it. We got pregnant right away after removal. After this baby is born, I will get another Mirena. We don't plan on having a third child but don't want to rule it out yet.

I had the Paragard about 5 years ago, I would get mega cramps with my period (which is usually non-existent) and it's also how I found out that I have a copper allergy.

I just had the Mirena placed on the 28th of February, I just stopped spotting three days ago. The only crampng was while it was being placed. No complaints yet, and my insurance covered all of it.

@mrs. tictactoe: A few of my friends in my mom group have them. One friend's husband got a vasectomy about 6 months ago so she went to have her IUD removed. The doctor couldn't find the strings and couldn't get to it in an office visit to have it removed. She's having it surgically removed in the near future. She's a nurse and she says she still recommends them.

Had paragard but took it our after three months of basically constant cramping and periods that were two weeks long each.

I went back on the pill and have normal length periods and no cramps any time of yhe month. Much better for me.

I had Mirena pre-LO and had another placed around 12 weeks PP. I can't handle hormonal BCP, but the Mirena works for me. I had several weeks of spotting the second time, but don't remember it happening the first time. I'm happy with it.

I had two Mirenas. I got a second one when my first expired and I wasn't quite ready to TTC yet. I had a great experience and plan to get another one right away once this baby comes out.

I had no periods for almost 9 years - woooohooo! - and also had a dramatic decrease in my migraine frequency and severity (my migraines used to come with my periods). I liked it better than depo. NuvaRing, or any of the pills I tried.

I had the paragard first, hated it. I usually had light periods with no cramping and couldn't deal with the horrendous cramping and heavy bleeding every month. Got the mirena, spotted for a while, then didn't get a period and everything seemed fine but started to get crazy acne and bloating from it. Had it removed and went to just condoms for while. Acne and bloating disappeared.

I’ve had 2 Mirenas (1 pre-LO and 1 post-LO) and no complaints with either. My only mini-compliant with the first Mirena I had was that I bled for weeks and weeks (between spotting and full-on bleeding) and had cramps for weeks. But once that went away, I had no cramps, no PMS and no periods (not even spotting) for several years. With the post-LO Mirena, I had very little bleeding after insertion, spotted very lightly for a couple of months when my period was due, and again have had no periods for a couple of years now.

I had mirena, but it made me bloated around my midsection and I also bled for 5 months straight, so I took it out. Also, DH could feel it during sex and it was weird for him.

I had Mirena after the boys, but it messed with me (I'm really sensitive to any hormonal birth control) so I had it removed. I bled for several weeks off and on after it was place and I then my periods were still monthly but shorter than normal. After Graham, I decided to try Paragard since it's a non-hormonal option. I know my periods may be heavier and cramped when they come back, but I'd rather that than the effects of hormonal BC. I had some spotting and cramping off and on for about 3 days after the Paragard was placed and no issues since then. Regarding both Mirena and Paragard, I LOVE not having to remember a pill or do anything. It's fantastic to know it's just taken care of for several years. We got pregnant with G immediately after having the Mirena removed so they mean it when they say that as soon as it is removed, you could get pregnant again.

I have Mirena and no complaints. I don't have a huge sex drive on it, but that is with any BC and we don't want to use condoms. I have some spotting every other month or so. But it is way better then 7 days of AF. Insurance paid the whole thing. I didn't even have a copay for the visit.

Do you have or have you had one? Do you love it or hate it? Why? Do you think there's a better option for BC?

I has taken us a year to get pregnant both times we tried, but I'm scared that if I leave it up to fate or try to just avoid ovulation, we will end up pregnant super early because the universe likes to laugh at my plans. We might want another baby one day, but not for a while...
