@marionberry: I've heard really bad things about depo provera, though of course now I don't recall what. I actually thought it was no longer being offered for some reason.

Has anyone had a bad experience on the pill, but been okay with a hormonal iud? I'd really love no periods, but the pill made me super emotional whacko, and caused my already severe cramping each month to be far worse, and made it last days.

I've had 2 Mirenas (pre and post LO) and no issues with either. No periods either, which rocks.

I'm trying to figure out what to do for birth control after the twins and prior to this conversation I was leaning toward mirena. Given the issues, I'm wondering if anyone has tried something like depo provera instead?

I got a Mirena put in in November. I had one period after that and spotted for a couple weeks. I haven't had a period since then. I was nervous at first because I thought it would take months to a year for periods to go away completely. I took pregnancy tests for a couple months. The only side effect is breast tenderness around the time I'm supposed to get my period.

I wanted to love my mirena and I did at first but it partially expelled. It turned out ok but I don't want to go through that again. When I'm finished having children I will use condoms and NFP until my husband is ready to get a vasectomy. I know of many people who have had good experiences with iuds though.

I thought about an IUD, but decided against it,because honestly I'm chicken. I've had 2 c-sections, so I don't have previous cervical dilation working for me. And my cervix is always super high and posterior, which means they'll almost certainly have a bit of a time getting it in. So I'm going back on the pill. Mini-pill + condoms while BF'ing. Taking no chances!

I had Mirena pre and post LO. My insertion at 8 weeks pp actually hurt MUCH more just because my vagina was extremely sensitive due to BFing. That caught me completely off guard since DH & I hadn't had sex pp yet. If I get it again I will wait until I can have sex comfortably (with a condom) before insertion. It took DH and I about a year (until I weaned) to be able to have sex pp. I don't think that had anything to do with the IUD but throwing that tidbit out there in case it did.

We did have trouble with DH saying he could feel the IUD the second time (no issues the first time). Strings were trimmed to almost nothing but he still complained. Two doctors said it was impossible for him to feel it but DH was so happy when I got it out to TTC#2.

I have the Paraguard/ copper IUD and I'm really happy with it. Insertion was pretty painless, just a little uncomfortable. Minimal, if any cramping, in the following weeks, although I did spot off and on for about 2 weeks. My periods on it are no different than before I had DS, except for heavier bleeding on the first day. No other issues at all! I'd definitely recommend it. My sister has used it for years with no complaints, and my OB also told me she has one lol

I got a Mirena in December at 8 weeks PP. Have had extremely light bleeding for most of December and half of January. I think that the hormones are finally settling down. I have had issues with hormonal birth control taking a while to regulate a normal cycle previously so it may just be me.

I'm on my second Mirena - love it. Postpartum insertion was painless (first pre-baby one, not so much, but still worth it). Did bleed for a month after the insertion but that stopped and hopefully I'll go back to no periods like I did with my first IUD. I am a huge IUD advocate (it's the birth control used by about 30% of all OBs I think) and am happy to answer questions! You have about the same risk as pregnancy as getting your tubes tied, but it's reversible. Though if you do get pregnant it's more likely to be ectopic. But still lower risk of getting an ectopic pregnancy than if you had no birth control.

I had Mirena inserted last April. It was pretty good, and my periods had disappeared. Over the Labour Day weekend, I experienced a huge amount of abdominal pain. It lasted for about 4 hours, and then it also disappeared, so I ignored it. My husband was travelling that week so while I was experiencing waves of discomfort, I didn't go to the hospital because I couldn't figure out how I could with the kids and no husband to look after them.
On the following Friday a friend forced me to go to urgent care. Within about 30 mins I was in an ambulance on my way to the hospital, where I was put in the resuscitation area because I had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, and had been (slowly) bleeding throughout the week into my abdomen.
Anyhow, ended up in surgery, things are fine now.
I decided not to continue with Mirena (not that one or any other), and only share my story because I hadn't thought about it as a possibility before I had mine inserted. Because I wasn't getting my periods, I had no indication of a potential pregnancy. We weren't trying. Mirena has such a low failure rate!
I have switched to the Nuva Ring which I also know has its own host of problems, but I feel more comfortable with it. And my husband will be getting snipped.

Warning!!!!! Very bad review below.

I had Paragard the copper IUD. Insertion was fine. Cramps after. I continued to be crampy in the following months. One night, (6 months after insertion) I went to bed and woke up at 2 in the morning in lots of pain. I got up and noticed I was in a pool of blood. Went to the ER and the IUD was partially expelled and was perforating my uterus. To make matters worse the ER dr pushed the IUD back up into my uterus. When I went to see my OB two days later it was already back out and the OB said that the ER dr caused me to get an infection by shoving it back in. My OB took it out and two weeks later I get Nexplanon (arm implant). Did I get pregnant on it? No. So it works as birth control. It just didn't work out for me. I now have to have an ultrasound on my uterus when I want to have another baby to see how much scar tissue there is. I have an intense fear of not being able to conceive now because my OB said it's possible.

I have a copper iud that I got about a year ago. I have mixed feelings. I did NOT want hormonal birth control, so it seemed like the copper iud was my best option. I got it about 8 weeks PP and insertion was completely pain free. However, I did have quite a lot of bleeding in the week that followed. Also, even though I was EBF, my period started the following month (my period didn't come back until 10 months PP when I EBF my first LO). The first 6 or so cycles were really heavy, but I didn't experience any bad cramping or other symptoms. About midway through the year, my cycles were a little more predictable, although the heavy days are much heavier than they were before the iud, which is definitely an inconvenience. The positive is that it's nice not to have to remember to take a pill and that it's hormone free. But there have been a lot of inconveniences with my cycles.

I have a Mirena. I've been really happy with it. Minimal side effects, insertion was pretty painless, and I dont really have a period anymore. Id recommend it. There are sometimes complications, but that is really a minority. I've had mine 3 years and would get another one.

I had Mirena for a couple of months and I wanted to like it so bad, but it gave me horrendous cramps even when I wasn't on my period. I ended up taking it out myself because I couple not handle it. I have heard great things about it and how some people don't get cramps, and everything else about it was great so I'd recommend at least trying it to see how your body reacts.
