I was pumping for lo3 and experienced painful letdown for the first time the whole 2 months I did this.. quit after that but I occasionally leaked and had pain a couple more weeks so I think it was just drying up that stopped it. :(

No tandem nurisng, but my letdown with my first and my second was painful (sort of like a pinching?). I have noticed this time that the letdown has gotten better this week (I am 5 weeks postpartum). Leaking also got better over time but I wore nursing pads constantly with my first, mostly because I was paranoid. I am experiencing the same thing you described though, where around the 3 hour mark if I haven't nursed my milk will letdown.

This was my experience with both kids. I still leak. Get yourself some reusable breast pads! They are way more comfortable than the disposable ones. I can always feel my letdown, but it isn’t as painful/uncomfortable now at 6.5 months postpartum. I collected tons of milk with my haakaa. I don’t use it anymore because DD2 is too big and squirmy. I haven’t used my big pump at all this time.

No experience with tandem nursing either, but I did have much more painful and forceful letdown with my second. It was like my boobs immediately kicked into gear and wanted to make all the milk. It eventually got better. I did have an oversupply that was affecting my LO so did some block feeding (with advice from my pediatrician) to work that out. But yeah it was way worse with my second at first.

No experience tandum nursing, but regarding leaking and painful letdown, it just took time. Your body’s just saying to you hey shouldn’t you feed that baby now?! I can’t remember how long it took to go away but I feel like by 6-8 weeks breastfeeding was at the totally easy point for me with my first. The leaking continued for a lot longer but I just wore nursing pads, and it was more as a precaution than that I was constantly leaky.

@DesertDreams88: I am going to guess that since you are nursing both and you are less than 6 weeks post partum that your body is working to figure out how much supply to make! Your older LO may also be consuming more with the increased supply. I would keep using the cups to collect the excess and just happily build your stash!

I would given it a couple more weeks to get settled and then you could try block feeding or some other tricks to regulate if you still feel like you have a high supply.

Kellymom also has some articles about tandum nursing https://kellymom.com/tandem-faq/06earlypostpartum/

With my first, I lucked out. We had a positive nursing relationship from about day 4. I never had painful engorgement or let down, I never leaked milk, and I had a very good supply that met his needs.

LO1 is 25 months and LO2 is 3 weeks. I am nursing both of them, yes I know, crazy. This was not my plan but kids subvert our plans, right? Anyway, I nurse LO1 about 3x a say for 3 min each and LO2 is about every 2.5 hours, for 20 to 30 minutes.

This time around I'm dealing with a lot of leaking and painful letdown. Will it get any better? Are there any tips or tricks to help manage this?

About twice a day , where I nurse just LO2, I use a haaka pump to catch the leaking on the other side. I've managed to collect about 6 oz a day this way, 3 go in the fridge for feeding later that day and three go in the freezer, I have about 60 oz frozen in the freezer at 3wks. I have a feeling that this is somewhat also the cause of the leaking at other times, but I don't really want to give it up because I like having milk in the fridge and freezer. I don't use the Haaka at night, I never have, but I do leak a fair amount at night.

As for the painful letdown, if I haven't fed in about 2 or 3 hours, all of a sudden my breasts will feel very painful and start leaking. It usually stops in a couple of minutes, but it sucks.
