We live in a one bedroom apt in NYC and we have our 6.5 month old DD in our room in a full size crib. A mini crib was a no no for us because I find them to be too small. It works fine, we have enough room. We are moving into a 2 bdr in a couple of months and I do look forward to being able to read a book among other things in bed again.

We shared a room with LO until she was almost 6 months old! We just put her crib and changing table in our room.

We own a small place (really wish we were in a rental situation instead) and we have just enough space for our queen size bed, a nightstand on one side of our bed, a chest of drawers on the other side, and the crib is snug in the corner by the foot of our bed. That is all the space we have in our room, and so far it works. We only use the room for sleeping and spend the rest of our time in the living room area, so this works for now. It is tougher when DS wakes up and cries off schedule in the middle of the night though. If things remain the same, we could consider rooming with him for the next two or three years, but I cannot imagine baby #2 fitting into this already-tight picture! :/

@sarac: Yeah, that is a major concern. On the plus side, we will be closer to DH's work and he will have a quick and easy commute, compared to the places we are looking where we could get a 2 bed (easy commute= happier husband with more time at home). On the other hand, we can afford a 2 bed, it's just that we won't love our neighborhood as much and all that jazz (so, less happy SAHM with no place interesting to walk). We are still debating.

@Foodnerd81: I'm remembering another great one that I'll try to find later. A walk in closet that one.

I would seriously consider the health of your marriage having a baby in the room long term. My girl finally moved out at 8 months and it was very very good for everyone. We really needed a space for just the grown ups.

@sarac: Thanks! I knew there must be a blog about it out there and couldn't find one through searching.

@leelee: Yeah, the quiet/sleeping thing is one of my main concerns. In the first couple months we'd want him/her next to the bed anyway, but after that I would want us both to be able to sleep. Neither of us snore, but if the baby is a light sleeper even rolling over too loud or walking around getting ready for bed could be an issue.

DD is in our room and it has worked for us so far. It does get cramped though and it would be nice if she had her own room. The only downside is that once DD is asleep we have to be super quiet and I can't help but think the reason she doesn't sleep through the night is because of us, DH snores and is always waking her up.

He has a precious little closet as his space. She just instagrammed a great picture of it

Check it out, and she has tons of other pictures of what it looked like with a crib. There are a thousand ways to make a tiny space special for your child, they don't really need a huge room.

@LindsayInNYC: About that small point, I can tell you that a full size crib DID NOT work for my daughter who loves to move in her sleep, and a pnp would have been a disaster. I think she's a little unique in that way, but you might think about it.

@MaisyMay: we have the Delta Riley (actually just switched it out for a full size, but we didn't have to by any means). I also used the Rock N Play sleeper ALL THE TIME because it could go under the bed or behind the dresser, it folds up so compact. I used it until he started sitting up and trying to get out of it.

@LindsayInNYC: yep, we have a mini-crib, too! it's the same size as a pack n play but it's solid wood. regular crib bedding doesn't fit but since you're not supposed to use blankets, bumpers, etc., it wasn't an issue for us. I did get a crib skirt and put a storage bin underneath it. I didn't feel the need for a changing table, so I got the JJCole diaper caddy and just bring that room to room - super easy. I have a storage chest that used to have our stuff in it but use that instead of a dresser for DS. I used my nightstand to keep a wipers warmer (I found this essential because cold wipes made my newborn quiver and cry and I couldn't take it, haha) and the underneath compartment kept my breastpump with I was pumping.
Sometimes I wish DS had more room to play, especially now that he's mobile. But we live across the street from a park with a water park and running track and have a great bike path behind the house.

We have a two bedroom with two kids, so Wonder Baby has been in with us and she's 11 months. We can fit a proper crib in our room, so we switched the Moses basket out at four months. She has a drawer in the dresser for sleepers and a couple baskets on top for diaper stuff. Because we do have another room, all her clothes and toys are in with her sister.

We just use a change pad on the bed, so the crib is the only exta furniture.

It's been fine, it's less work to feed in the night, and now that we're sleep training I don't have to get up to check on her, I just mumble "nigh night baby" and we both go back to sleep.

We're planning on moving her out with her sister next month. It will be nice to have a private bedroom again, our couch and shower have been seeing a lot of action (;)) since she got old enough to be a light sleeper.

@Foodnerd81: That I'm not sure of. I think it depends on the size of the child. I do know people who are around 18 months to 20 months and are still in their crib

@Mrsbells: I was thinking we would go right to a twin bed, rather than buy the toddler bed conversion set anyway (should have said that). I guess-- when does a baby usually grow out of being in a crib in general? I know my nephew who is almost 2 is still in his, but is that late?

@MaisyMay - Is that a full size crib? A 2 bed (plus nanny/day care) isn't likely in the budget for us either. Nevermind we're TTC now so it doesn't make sense to have a 2 bed for an unknown period of time before a LO is even born.

Like PP, we have her crib and changing table in our room, but she sleeps in a rock'n'play (only 3 weeks old) for now. I'll add a few pics so you can see how we gave LO her own space. We share a closet, all 3 of us, and that gets tight, but otherwise, it's all okay.
Her changing table is right next to where the fabric ends.

@Foodnerd81: We have a minicrib and the thing is solid! Yes, it's small, but I've heard of people using them for nearly 2 years. Ours can transition to a twin bed when we are ready for it.

@LindsayInNYC: I have friends who did the 1 bedroom thing until their baby was nearly 1. I imagine we'll do the same because a 2 bedroom just isn't in the budget for now.

@LindsayInNYC: @rachiecakes: I was looking at a mini-crib as well. Do you know if they have a shorter life span than a regular crib-- like the baby will outgrow it sooner than otherwise, or do kids need to move to a toddler bed before they would actually outgrow either? I really don't want to buy stuff specifically for this space that is less functional, if that makes sense.

We are leaning a little more to having the baby sleep in our big closet, but we are going to have to spend some time in there and see if it gets stuffy. Yeah, DH and I will literally be sitting in our closet for a while.

Thanks for all the insights. It is sounding like it is doable so it's nice not to have a ton of pressure to move asap.

@LindsayInNYC: I was way too paranoid to move to a 2 bed while TTC-- I was afraid we'd move, be spending more money and then have it take a really long time to get pregnant. So we purposely did wait until I was pregnant to really think about it.

We did this for the first four months :). It was so cozy and so do-able. The nesting instinct really helped us organize and prepare our tiny place. We had a bassinet set up in our room and converted the top of my dresser into a changing table. We started out very minimalist without a lot of "stuff", but we did have the swing in the living room (shoulda skipped the swing). The only real problem is the stroller which we often had to bring in to the living room too. We baby wore almost exclusively, so I would have waited to get the stroller for a while. At about 15 lbs was when I really started wanting to use the stroller and she didn't hit that until after 6 months.
