Like @looch: any exposure to another language is great, and the younger the better, IMO.

My two started a 3rd language at 2 years for my older LO and 4 months for my younger LO and they are completely fluent. My older LO took about 6 months to really start speaking and fully understanding the language, but now that he has been fully immersed for 3+ years, outsiders think he is a local born and raised kid.

I really think any exposure to a second language is wonderful, regardless if you speak it or if kids continue on with it.

I considered a Spanish immersion charter school (k-8) for my LO. I took a tour a few months ago, and I didn't think it was the right fit for my LO. There are a lot of advantages of being in an immersion program. At that age, I'm sure your LO would adjust quickly. You don't need a background in the language to enroll.

Oh and I learned Spanish in a full immersion class in college it was over 6 terms. The instructor never spoke English even on the first day.

@lawbee11: they do have elementary education, but the most I could commit to would be through 1st grade because we will probably end up moving

There is a very popular preschool here that offers this. I went in for a visit since there is a 2 year wait list. I think kids can easily be multi lingual. You and DH would just need to learn some simple Spanish to support it in the home I would think.

Would you be interested in continuing it into elementary school (if that is even an option)? An elementary school in our district does a Spanish immerision program that we're planning to enroll LO in (assuming she gets accepted), but it's a 5-year commitment so that they can get the full benefit of it. I'm not sure if just one year of pre-K would be confusing for her. Another option is asking for opinions on it in a local mom's Facebook group or something like that?

I don't have experience with Spanish, but I was put in a French immersion program starting in first grade (I was 6). It was 100% French all day and none of us had any previous experience. We all picked it up immediately. I assume it would be even easier for a 3.5 year old.

I am looking into some prek/full day care options for my 3.5 year old. One of the options is a Spanish immersion Montessori school. It states they speak fluent Spanish in the morning and then fluent English in the afternoon.

The school seems very nice and a good location for us, but... My daughters only Spanish interaction has come from Dora the explorer. Would this place even be an option for her, would she be overwhelmed?

Thoughts?
