we started around 5.5 months and it was smooth sailing on all fronts! :) perhaps if you are unsure of it right now, you could begin by just giving her 'tastes' instead of trying to actually feed, if you know what i mean? :) letting her have tiny tastes on a spoon and seeing her reactions? :) i bet it will be super fun! a few licks shouldn't change anything with respect to poop, and any reactions (probably unlikely) would be mild :). have fun!! :) and as others have said, it's not a problem to wait longer, either!

Thanks for all the continued encouragement. She refused to nap this afternoon, so we ended up doing bedtime earlier and skipped the solids, again. Will try again tomorrow night if she is in a good mood. Or... I might keep dragging my feet until her 6 month appt. in a week.

Can't believe she's 6 months already! I was worried about the poo changes as well. And losing the convenience of EBF.

We waited until just over 6.5 months to start BLW. So we've been at it for just over two weeks. It was a little intimidating giving him food the first few times, we've struck it lucky though, he's really only gagged three times. It's true, they really figure it out quickly! How much to take/how far they can put something in their mouth.
Anyways, we've given a whole array of vegetables and pretty much every fruit under the sun minus strawberries. As well as steak, chicken, pork and eggs. We've had zero reactions/vomiting. I think the worst so far has been the gas he got from steamed broccoli. We started with breakfast and offered banana and avocado. Loves both! He seems to eat this most at breakfast and least at dinner time.
The challenge for us, is explaining to family/people that have never heard of BLW and hearing 'he can't have that' 'that's much too big' 'he'll choke' etc etc. I've just come to accept the fact that we'll sound like broken records for awhile. Once they see how well he can feed himself already they are astounded!
Oh, and BLW is a perfect way to help 'clean up' family meals. I considered myself a fairly healthy eater but this has definitely kicked it up a notch!
I'd say just follow her cues. Good luck, she'll do great!

Nope. I refuse to tell you anything about starting solids because that's not possible. She's not big enough yet. She's still an itty bitty baby. Right? She's not 6 months. She's still wittle!!!

But seriously...I was terrified about solids and was a total pansy. BLW was noooooooooooooot for my house.

We started at 6 months with the requisite rice cereal. I only did it for a week b/c the dr. said to start with that. We then moved on quickly to other purees like sweet potato, string beans, butternut squash. We also started with avocado, banana, sweet potatoes mushed. Sometimes she'll gag a bit on something but it's nothing too crazy. No allergic reactions so far and she's been exposed to lots of different fruits and veggies. Yogurt and oatmeal are also favorites. She's 9 months now and we're trying to master picking food up and getting it into her mouth. ;)

firstly, you don't have to start solids simply because she's six months! there's no magical switch that flips ;) we didn't start for real until closer to 7, because he wasn't showing enough signs for me!

we started with fork mashed banana at lunch time. he gobbled it down. we were slow with starting new foods (he ate a lot of banana and apple puree at the beginning) and had no issues with throwing up or any allergic reactions :)

Ahhhh don't be scared, solids are super exciting  . We gave A pureed sweet potato when she was about 6 months 2 weeks and she was hilarious, the faces she pulled made great photos. It's safe to say she wasn't impresses, ha ha. We gave each new food for 3 days to make sure there was no allergy. I think we did avocado and banana early on, and blended each one with breastmilk. She never let me spoonfeed her and insisted on doing it herself so it was always VERY messy but that's just how she rolls. Then she started taking the food off the spoon and just putting the empty spoon in her mouth so we started BLW, first with banana then with roasted or steamed veg and fruit. She's 10 months now and doing smashing. Good luck, honestly, you'll have lots of fun with it.

We started with sweet potato around dinner time and honestly, it was so anti climactic! He wasn't a huge fan at first and only ate a teeny bit, and that's it. We never had any vomiting, spitting up, or allergic reactions at all.

I would just really not stress about it...you can start as slow as you like, or put it off for a bit longer if you want. She'll let you know when she's ready for more!

We gave DD a few bites of mushed up banana as her first food and she did not like it at all. She made the funniest yucky face. Haha. She loved avocado though. I just give her a little bit of different fruits and veggies to try in the beginning and I followed the 3 day rule. No allergic reactions or vomiting!

We've been giving A purees for 2 weeks or so now and he freakin loves it! I've also given him bits of avocado which went over well. Honestly, I wanted to wait til 6 months and do BLW but he was SO interested in our food (grabbing our plates and drinks, making chewing motions with his mouth, etc) he was definitely ready. We've had no problems thus far! He even grabs the spoon and feeds himself. Good luck :)

P. S. He's had sweet potato, green beans, prunes, carrot and pear.

K is officially over the 6 months mark and we should be, by all accounts, ready to start introducing some solids. I keep D R A G G I N G my feet though. I feel sad that she's not so little anymore, scared of throw-up/poop/allergic reactions/gagging/the mess. Each time I've mentioned to DH this weekend about starting to give her a tiny bite this weekend, he's come up with some reason to delay it too. We're both such chickens. heheh

I want to try and give her a little bit of avocado tonight, but I've heard about a lot of vomiting/spitting up. DH is worried about any bad reactions. I know it shouldn't be such a big deal. Tell me about how your LO reacted to their first solids, first time/da, week? Anything we should watch out for? Did any of your LOs throw-up in their sleep? We're such first-timers...
