I had to take insulin during my pregnancy and was terrified at first of the needles. The flex pens aren't bad at all! Towards the end of my pregnancy, I had to take a lot of insulin and had to use syringes, which scared me all over again. I had my husband give those to me. You get used to it! I had so much trouble with my fasting blood sugar that I was worried that I might have problems post partum, too, but when I had my 6 week post partum follow up, I passed my two hour glucose test just fine.

@ladybee: I'm a little worried about insulin too. I'm a type 2 diabetic, but right now I just take oral meds. I normally have pretty good control of my blood sugar when I'm not pregnant, but they have definitely gotten worse now that I am. My MFM dr told me to expect to be insulin-dependent as I get farther along in my pregnancy because I am taking the max dosage of oral meds now. Good luck to you and keep up posted!

@ladybee: I found that for me, not all carbs were created equal. Meals where most of my carbs were potatoes I did ok, but if it was pasta, then my numbers were really high. I also really needed to have the right balance at meals.

@ladybee: have you started taking insulin yet? A lot of factors can influence your blood sugar: if you exercised or walked a lot, the type of carbs you ate, how much protein and/or fiber you had with it. Usually when you go out to eat, it might be a particularly fatty meal, so that could be why your sugars were a little lower.

@MrsKRB: last night we went out to eat and I had more then my 45 grams of carbs. I finally had good numbers this morning. Any idea why?

I took insulin for my GD. It wasn't bad at all. It took a lot of the pressure off to be perfect at eating. It was just a little needle I took in my hip. My endocrinologist gave me a set of guidelines about how much and everything. It was only for a short time.

@ladybee: I had GD and after my post partum check, I was referred to an endocrinologist. Yes, you are at greater risk for diabetes in the future but it may not be imminent. At this point, I'm insulin resistant not diabetic. But I do have family history so it's not necessarily just because of my GD.

@Kemma: I will check that out, thanks! My after meal numbers with diet control have consistently been under 100. My fasting ranges from 87-112. Most days it's between 94-97.

@MrsKRB: I'm not sure. The doctor today told me the prepare for the fact that I will be diabetic after delivery. I can not following this diet for the rest of my life, I just don't like carbs that much.

@ladybee: well, with the insulin you can be a little more liberal with your diet, but you should still follow it for the most part. I know it's really tough, but on the bright side you probably won't have to do it anymore after you give birth!

@ladybee: I don't have diabetes, but I am a dietitian, and yes, you still need to follow the diet. Depending on the type of insulin you are taking, you will need to know the general carbohydrate content of your meal. Also, if you don't follow the diet you may require even more insulin which wouldn't be fun! And yes, you still check your blood sugars.

Did you do a trigger shot? It's just as easy and painless. It seriously doesn't hurt at all. The first time I gave myself a shot I was soooo nervous. But it's really not bad at all.

I met with a MFM doctor today for an unrelated issue but we discussed my GD at length. He would like me to start insulin and is messaging my endocrinologist. My next appointment is in two weeks but I have a lot of anxiety about insulin and needles.

Please give me tips, reassurance, basically anything you've got. Did you have to continue the diet as strictly?
