We had a horrible sleep regression right when DD turned 2 years old as well. Her worst ones were 4 months, 16 months and 2 years was the worst. It came on the heels of an international trip with lots of jet lag. But the first time we returned from a trip like that (when she was 1 year old) she went back to her normal routine/sleep schedule like a champ within two days. This time, after she turned 2, it lasted 2 months. She would wake up every 1-2 hours all night. Nothing worked, though we didn't try melatonin for this. She was having her second molars coming out but she has never been a bad teether and almost never complained about her teeth. (There has been only a few times I remember when she would reach into her mouth and point to her first molar to say that it hurt). Anyways, we tried everything except taking away her one nap. The day that my friend suggested that, that night she slept thru the night again. We never took the nap away, I felt like intuitively DD really still needs that nap, and she does still need a nap. But it was just funny that it happened to be the day that my friend suggested it and my DH and I decided that TOMORROW we will try that, that was the night she slept again. SO.... it's probably a regression and will end. It felt like forever to us because I didn't know kids still had sleeping regressions at 2 years old, I thought it'd be more trouble related to transitioning to a crib and them getting out of bed, that kind of thing. We thought we tried everything and were getting desperate. But luckily it ended. Randomly. Without explanation.

@Mrs. Blue: The 2 year regression was horrible for us. It took 2 1/2 months to straighten back out. LO is now 3 and still gets a 2 hour nap from 12-2. It was just a horrible gradual shift to get back on track. We had to do Benadryl for a week (per our peds instruction) to get her back on track.

@Smurfette: Yep. Her door and mine are closed but they're those stupid levers so she can open them right up. I've thought about a gate but I don't know if I'm ready to do that yet. She was up at 530, came out twice and now I think she's asleep again but I'm awake. :(

ETA: spoke too soon. She got out of her locked door and just walked in 2 minutes later.

@birdofafeather: Do you shut her door at night? What about a gate so she can't get out? R will get up but at least she stays in her room. Her door swells in the summer so we have to pull it harder to open it so I think she can't open it if she did try.

2 years for us was really rough, we moved out of our apartment, with my MIL for a week, then we moved out of the country again and my son began part time day care, so to say that we had a lot going on is an understatement and his sleep reflected that. We began cosleeping again at that time just to get us through and in hindsight, I wish I never started that again. We didn't drop the afternoon nap until 3 years 8 months.

We've been having some not so great sleep the last couple weeks. Extra early wake ups and insists on coming to our bed. He never falls back asleep. The odd MOTN waking but he goes right back to sleep. The last two nights have been super difficult putting him to bed. He normally has a 2-2.5 hour nap, yesterday 3. I never wake him from a nap. If he doesn't have a good nap dinner and bedtime are a disaster.

@Mrs. Blue: my guys were super happy during the day while getting their molars, but they just didn't want to sleep. Even E who usually is a mess when teething, had one bad day and then a while bunch of lengthy (but happy) night time wake ups. I bought a gro clock because I thought it would help before I realized they had teeth coming in!

@littlehunny: I actually just looked the other day for molars. One has a couple of points on each side that are poking down but haven't broken through the gums yet. I couldn't get a good look in the others mouth but he's usually my terrible teether. It could be that, I suppose. They're really happy, though, while they're awake. They just bounce around the cribs and laugh and talk.

@Mrs. Blue: My guys go thru stages where they don't sleep well at night and they're 2.5. Lately they have been telling me that there are scary noises and they are having bad dreams so they don't want to go back to sleep.
Do they have their 2 year old molars yet? We had so many bad nights while those were coming in.
They usually are in bed around 9 (although they could probably go down a little earlier) and they are still taking a 2-2.5 hr nap otherwise they are a disaster at dinner.

I just wanted to add something that really helped us was we cut out sugar. No candy, cookies, juice, etc. the regression hit around the holidays so she was getting sweets almost everyday. It helped a ton! We still notice when she has too much cause it affects her sleep at night.

@Mrs Green Grass: We do still use white noise. Our bedtime routine involves pajamas, brushing teeth, 2 books, 2 songs (last one is always the same song), bedtime prayers, and then tucking them in. They sleep with two blankets and their rabbits that they love, but they've also added a couple other stuffed animals. I'm thinking I may actually need to take away those because sometimes they play with the extra animals, but they also snuggle them at night, too, so I'm not sure.

We're struggling here too. Bedtime went from7:30 to 8:30 and she has been getting up earlier than usual :(. She needs us in the room to fall asleep and stalls like crazy asking for things. We made the switch to a twin bed because we figured, what the hell, sleep already sucks? Tonight is the first night. Maybe it'll help? Lol. Grasping at straws here.

R is taking forever to fall asleep and most nights goes to bed at 830. Doesn't matter what time we put her down. And she is waking 630/700. It sucks. But at least she does, for the most part, STTN. Got up a couple times for no reason due to the toddler bed and she can just get out. Yesterday she took a 3hr nap, which never happens, and then didn't go to bed till 930. And was up at 7.

hugs!

It was the worst for us, it lasted a couple months I think. It affected her naps and overnight sleep. We would have to be there for her to fall sleep for her nap, not horrible but she would fight it. Night time was way worse. She would wake up several times a night crying and nothing would help. The only thing that seemed to help would be for one of us to stay in her room unt she would fall back asleep. That was anywhere from 20 minutes to and hour an a half. I slept too many nights on her floor way too pregnant, it sucked. Little by little we would step away, we would say we needed to go to the bathroom or go check something and we will be back. She finally grew out if it for the most part. But her sleep has never been what it was before the regression

We had a regression right at 2 where she needed us to be there when she fell asleep. She got over it in a few weeks though she still has random nights where she wants us there. She still takes long naps though (2-3 hours) and has no issues falling asleep at bedtime! If I woke her up after an hour, she'd be a mess.

Wait, what? I thought sleep regressions were done by this age...sigh. 2 year old twin boys here, too. Now I'm going to live in fear. I guess mine are regressing somewhat...4:45am wake-ups, short naps (sometimes only 45 minutes, and we're on one nap a day). I thought it was due to 2-year-molars coming in. Ug.

We had a 2-year regression with long night wakings,, but 2-2.5 hours does sound like a really long nap for 2. I know some kids do awesome with long naps, so you may be right that it's not an issue, but it may be worth limiting to 1-1.5 hours to check the theory. I've had to limit nap to an hour since before 2 to ensure better nights.

If your LO had a sleep regression around 2 years, what was it like & how long did it last?/

Both of our boys have been having sleep issues and I have no idea what else to try. A couple months ago, E (and F to a lesser degree) started taking a couple hours to fall asleep or he would wake up in the middle of the night and just be awake for 2 hours or so. Our pedi recommended using melatonin for a few weeks to help get his circadian rhythm back on track. It was great while they were taking it. They were actually sleep at bedtime and would go to sleep within minutes and sleep all night. After 4 weeks, we needed to stop giving it to them per our pedi's instructions and their sleep was awful again from the first night. They don't go to sleep until between 9:30-10:30 no matter what time we put them to sleep. This happens whether they played hard outside all day or had a quieter day. Naps were really awful for a while, but those are actually getting better. I don't let them sleep longer than 2-2 1/2 hours and and wake them up by 2:30 at the latest so I don't think their naps are impacting their night time sleep.

So . . . I'm curious what other people's experiences have been with 2-year sleep regressions.
