One was just a lunch and there was no real activity. I thought it was sort of boring. For the other there was a quiz that people filled out as they came in and then we went over the funny answers together. They also did a guess the tummy circumference with TP, and a guess how many pins are in the jar games. It was pretty low key, but still enough entertainment that there was more to it than just opening presents.
At a friend's shower we did the guess what's in the puree game and that was fun too.

@shopaholic: that's why we did cloth diapers are burp cloths to decorate, because i knew she'd never put decorated onesies on the babies, but as burp cloths to wipe up vomit they were great!

I didn't think I'd really like games either, but people who wanted to play in the games all got really into it! The biggest hit was "Dress the Baby" and different teams had to design and dress a "baby" on a team. Those who played were into it, and everyone else was into it just to watch the hilarity and have fun cheering for the winners.

People also really liked the "decorate the onesie" activity table. Even the guys got into it. That being said, I wouldn't put my baby in most of them - they came out really ugly and/stuff came off in the wash afterwards. That's also why I didn't want the "make the letters" or any kind of room decoration for the nursery. The onesies are easier to just toss if I didn't like them.

We didn't really have any activities or games at my shower - mostly just eating some yummy food and visiting then opening gifts - which was just fine by me :)

I do like the idea of some of the decorating activities - I attended a shower where we painted/did iron on's on onesies and it was pretty fun!

If you kept the gender a secret doing some of the Old Wives Tales could be fun.

The guess how many whatever is in the bottle or bowl is always fun.

The don't say "baby" or cross your legs games with clothing pins is always fun. Prize goes to the person with the most pins.

You could always make part of the food an activity, such as an ice cream sundae bar or diy pizza.

My first shower did a game where you had to name a baby thing/association which each letter of the alphabet. Whoever got the most won the prize. Then it was another game where you would name what the baby of an animal was called.

My 2nd shower, they did a price is right of baby items. What was the price of a pack a diapers, pacifiers, etc. she told where she got the prices at, Walmart, then whoever was the closest to the total without going over, won.
My favorite game was Daddy knows best. She emailed DH and asked him like 14 questions baby related, how many diapers does a newborn use a day, what relative will she like the best, what has been Smurfettes favorite thing during pregnancy, etc. Then we answered based on how we thought he would answer. Sadly I didn't get the most right!

My sister and mom threw me a "high tea" shower. It was at a little coffee shop and they served little sandwiches and treats. It was pretty awesome, and we only played one game. It was the tape one where people cut a piece they thought was the circumference of my bump. I don't like games either, but that one was fun!

@Happygal: there will only be 2 people without kids there. I'm hoping they won't feel left out ad that they'll give advice that's pretty generic, like enjoy every moment or have fun. I saw it done at another shower and I didn't have kiddos so I opted for something generic like enjoy the ride!

We did somethign a little different, it was an evening cocktail and appetizer event. My parents hosted, it started at 7pm, I opened gifts as people arrived (mostly the guys didn't care about the gift part, the women were excited for that). No games, just drinks for everyone (except me!). I finally gave in at midnight and went home, apparently my dad and some of the guys were still going at 2am!!! It was an absolute blast, and totally my style :)

@runnerd: we did letters at the shower i threw for BFF! she was having twins, so there were plenty of letters for the guests. we also did cloth diapers decorated with fabric makers, she loved those and used them all the time! everyone enjoyed doing both, so i don't think that would be too much for them just to do the letters =)

I really want to have people decorate alphabet letters for the nursery, but I'm worried that might be asking too much labor from people depending on who's in the crowd. I know my friends would enjoy, not so sure about relatives.

I love the small, laid back showers like you're going to have. I would consider who is attending your for the advice bit. I don't have children, so I wouldn't feel right giving parenting advice, and therefore would feel a bit left out. I went to a shower where people wrote a note to the baby. They could give advice, tell a story, just say hi....it was nice.

There have been a few games that I did like that didn't involve things like eating food out of diapers.....one shower they did the shoe game where the mom and dad sat back to back and were asked questions like, "who will be the one to discipline? Who will cry at the birth?" And another showed pictures of celebrities when they were babies and people guessed who they were.

My shower was at a baseball game so the entertainment was taken care of. We ate, mingled, the boys watched baseball, and dh and I opened gifts. It was coed so it was a big shower and gifts took a long time.

I just went to a shower where they asked the daddy to be questions and then we had to guess how many of his answers the mommy to be was going to get right. They asked things like how many hours does a newborn sleep? And different newborn questions and also more personal questions like what is the dad most excited about to do with his son? What did the dad say was the mom to bes biggest craving? What was her most embarrassing pregnancy moment? Etc. It was a cute game.

I've also seen the onesies activity, where people drew with markers or painted stuff on or added appliqué on the onesies. Or i bet you can do it with bibs. I didn't think I'd use bibs much, but man, if your baby is a drooler, u end up using a lot!!

Have fun at your shower!

Mine was very much like the one @anonysquire described. I didn't want games either. It was a brunch drop in and as people came I would open their gift with them and chat a little.i liked that part because I got a chance to talk to everyone individually and it was great for those special homemade gifts too. My shower was bigger though, probably 30-40 people at least? I have thrown a shower before where we had each person decorate a onesie for the baby. That was fun too because it gave something to do but wasn't a crazy game or anything. You could always pick yo favorites for prizes of that too!

I threw my sister a shower in November. She aso didn't want games. We kind of treated it like an open house. Lots of good food and she just opened presents like the whole time. And that was all!

My mom is throwing a shower for me, it'll be 10-15 people and I'm hoping for minimal games. I really don't like the game thing, although we may do one about parenting advice. We did this at our rehearsal dinner with marital advice and it was a lot of fun. We asked for each person to write on a slip of paper their best marital advice and then DH and I each picked out favorite and whoever wrote those got a prize.

Since people are so eager and willing to dole out advice, I thought it'd be fun and I told my mom that I'd make sure to tell everyone to make it good because this was their only shot at giving advice, and I'd pick top 3 and give prizes. I've seen the advice thing done before and it was really sweet, lots of tearjerker stuff like always being there for them and loving them unconditionally.

But beyond that game and opening presents, I don't know what else to do! What did you do at your shower? Or what have you seen at other showers that you really liked?
