I'm adopted! It was a private adoption and I was brought home at 4 days old - my mom's doctor knew of a teenage girl who would be placing her child. So things moved much quicker for my parents than they would typically, especially now. This was in 1984 so things were different. My brother was also adopted through private adoption (through a minister who knew of someone) and was brought home at about 5 months. In between my brother and I, my parents also adopted another boy who they had to return to the biological mother.

on top of that, my adoptive mom was adopted. and my little sister placed a baby into an open adoption situation about 4 years ago. so i have a lot of firsthand experience! ask any questions you might be interested in asking and i'll answer them from my perspective. i love talking about adoption :)

Hi!! :) That is exciting that you are considering adoption!

We adopted our son as a private newborn domestic adoption. The process of taking classes and doing our homestudy took a few months, and then we got our son within just a couple of weeks of our homestudy being completed. There were a few bumps in the road, but overall, we had a good experience, and would do it again in a heartbeat if finances allowed!

We just got our foster care license and are hoping to foster infants, with the hopes of adopting again! It will definitely be a different experience than our son's adoption but we are excited!

If you have any questions about domestic private adoption, or foster care adoption, I would love to answer them for you! :)

We adopted our son 6 years ago. We did a domestic infant adoption through a private adoption agency. (we are actually celebrating our adoption day tomorrow) What should have been a straight forward placement turned into a contested adoption that we struggled with for a year. But looking back I would do it all ten fold just to be his mom. If you h ave any questions feel free to message me.

There's a bunch of HB bloggers who have gone through the adoption process.

I currently volunteer with a non-profit that assists orphans in China. It is not an adoption center but it does promote and advocate for children to be adopted and I've learned so much through them that has really opened my eyes and heart. We aren't ready to adopt right now but hopefully when we're a little older, we will be more in a place to adopt an older child with "special needs" - probably a boy because these children are often the ones left behind.

This is a great site for more information if you are interested. http://www.adoptspecialneeds.org/

Good luck with your journey!

I'm nearing the completion of my process of adopting a toddler from South Korea. Our process has been shorter than most...we'll have gone through it for about 9 months by the time he gets home. This is because he was a waiting child and we did not wait for an "infant" referral. Overall the process has been great, although the change to two trips instead of one has been stressful. It is extremely expensive, although we are getting some assistance from the tax credit and some assistance through my job.

ETA: I've written about the whole experience on my blog as well :) if you want tons of detail

While DH and I are still pursuing treatment and attempting to conceive a biological child, I have thought for a while that we would likely "have one, adopt one" (for age reasons, a sense that we could be good adoptive parents, an "ache" that comes from thinking of children growing up without consistent caregivers/"a family" ).

That said, neither one of us has much experience with adoption, personally. DH had a high school friend who was adopted internationally; I have had casual conversations with people (adopted/birth mothers/women considering adoption to grow their family) and done quite a bit of reading since we began thinking about having kids; and both of us have had some contact with adoptive families and their children through work...but that's still pretty meager overall.

Would you mind telling me about your experience-- whether you were or have adopted? Or if you strongly considered or are in the process of adopting? Was your adoption international, domestic, foster care, embryo? What snags, if any, have come up along the way? What has been particularly good about your experience?

Thanks in advance for your thoughtfulness!
