@PinkElephant: thank you for sharing! I’m nervous about it but ready for a definitive answer about my little boy! I’m sorry you had such a rough experience being pressured into it, I’m sure that didn’t help at all!

I had one in my third pregnancy to look for/rule out possible genetic reasons that my baby wasn’t growing the way she should have been (IUGR). Physically, my experience was similar to what the pp described- over very quickly, more uncomfortable than painful (I had cramping), and felt very routine in the way it was handled by the staff at MFM (they were very comfortable and at ease - clearly they do it all the time, which made me feel better). We had the initial quick results the next day, more detailed findings within a week. We opted not to do the microarray testing because we were counseled that the microarray often brings up inconclusive results (ie, they find a minor abnormality but don’t know what it means and can’t test further). I was upset about the situation, so I opted not to watch on ultrasound. My husband did and assured me the needle got nowhere near DD and that she was oblivious :)

I was (negatively) pressured into my amino (I didn’t want it but was made to feel like I had to), so mentally it was a tough experience, and I just wanted to go home and not do much until we had results....but physically I was able to function just fine afterwards, and the physical side of the experience was was much better/easier than expected!

Fingers crossed for a smooth experience for you!

@LabradorLover: I had an amnio with my first. It was a pretty straightforward process-they did an ultrasound to check the baby's position, and continued with the ultrasound throughout the entire procedure. I remember it being very uncomfortable, but not painful. I was also surprised at the amount of fluid drawn (it was a lot! or at least it seemed that way at the time). After the procedure, I went home to rest/take it east for the rest of the day. Truly, it was a really smooth easy procedure. Of course I was nervous and worried, but I had great technicians/Docs and felt very well taken care of. I hope your experience is just as easy/smooth!

Hi ladies,

Recently found out that there is a possibility our little one could have Down Syndrome (I had the MaterniT21 test done). After having a positive and informative meeting with a genetic counselor, I have decided to go ahead and have an amniocentesis done to have a more definitive answer.

Looking to hear from anyone who has had one done before and can maybe tell me what to expect?? I have researched and been told about the procedure itself but, let’s just say, I’m very nervous!!

Thanks in advance!
