I've had one amnio and two CVS procedures. No numbing with the amnio. It felt weird- there was a weird poking pressure when he inserted the needle which was a little painful, but it wasn't terrible. It was mostly weird, and I'd describe it as uncomfortable pressure more so than pain. I just stared at the ceiling the whole time. It was over really quickly too.

I actually preferred the amnio to the CVS since both of my CVSs were transvaginal and I needed to have a full bladder and I have never had to pee that much in my life and it was awful.

I had no numbing shot. For me it was less painful than drawing blood, but I hate drawing blood. I closed my eyes, DH was watching. I didn't even realise when it was over... DH said: you can open your eyes now the needle is out.
But, I was so shocked when I saw how much fluid they took...
(Feel free to wall me, if you have any questions)

Even if they don't offer it, maybe they will give it to you if you ask! I always ask for an extra shot of zofran in my IV so I don't wake up sick, and I've never had a doctor refuse.

I had an amnio at 16 weeks, and I think I had a numbing shot first but honestly can't remember! The whole thing wasn't too bad. I just stared at the ceiling, and it was over quickly. Good luck!

@sarahbee: I had blood drawn for the MaterniT21 test yesterday but that is only 90-92% accurate for trisomy 13. It is more accurate for Down Syndrome and trisomy 18. The genetic counselor DH and I met yesterday discussed pros and cons to each test with us yesterday. Thanks for your reply.

@MsLipGloss: @MamaG: thanks, ladies!

@MsLipGloss: Totally agree, amnios are very safe (the risk is very, very slight). I was just suggesting the cell free DNA test in the interim because it has zero risk and since it can be performed now, it could provide some clarity sooner than an amnio.

@sarahbee: I believe OP is having a cell free fetal DNA test done and is awaiting results. Her next step is amnio from what I understand from prior posts.

@sarahbee: An amnio is a very safe, very reliable option.

If you're a few weeks from being able to have an amnio, could you have a cell free fetal DNA test like Maternit21 or Verifi or similar performed in the interim? All those tests involve is taking some of mama's blood so there's no risk. Please disregard this if you're having the amnio due to the results of a cell free fetal DNA test... but if you're jumping to straight to amnio after an NT screen (which has an up to 90% false positive rate!) you have other very safe, very reliable options that could help inform your decision to have an amnio.

@swedishfish: I did. At 16 weeks. I wasn't numbed in any way. I remember it being very uncomfortable, but not necessarily painful (if that makes sense).

ETA: Please feel free to ask me/wall me with any questions!

I had one at 36 weeks to check for lung maturity.

The dr told me I could have 2 pricks (1 numb and 1 amnio) or 1 prick (just the amnio)

I said just 1!

The first time it didn't really hurt - pressure was there though -

But then my sac moved and he had to remove the needle and try again. For some reason the 2nd time it hurt a little more (I was squeezing DH's hand with a death grip (so he says) not sure why - I was not crying or anything but it was a little uncomfortable but not as bad as I imagined it would be!

Best of luck!

I'll be having an amnio done in a few weeks. The genetic counselor said the doctors usually don't numb your belly...hubba wha?
