We did BLW starting at 6 months. We never did purées and she fed herself. It worked really well and it was nice to be able to give her whatever we were eating. She is still a very adventurous eater at 3.5. We don't have any food allergies in our family either.

We did not do BLW.

I wasn't opposed to it, but we started solids early for my son's reflux and weight issues and he was never (and still isn't) a motivated eater. Giving him a chunk of apple to gnaw on wasn't going to do anything for him because he's not excited about it. So we fed him purees while offering him neat/easy snacks like puffs or mum mums to learn his pincer grab and gave him a piece of steamed broccoli to gum at while we ate dinner at night so he wouldn't get bored. He really didn't "get" self-feeding because he didn't care about eating, but he did finally start trying foods and feeding himself at around a year old.

Even now he's pretty whatever about food, drives me bananas. At 18 months he's just now experimenting with spoons and open cup - something I think more food motivated kids get earlier.

Strict BLW is skipping puree and just starting to let your child explore "real" food (soft in the beginning, of course). And definitely self feed vs being fed.

I did a combo; we did puree for around 2 weeks then moved onto exploring food-food. We started at 6 months. We loved it! It was definitely trial and error, messy, and worry some (even though I know gagging vs choking it was still scary).

By the time they master pincer grasp (for DD it was around 8-8.5 months) then it got much easier.

I loved it for the fact that we didn't have to always make separate puree or even separate meals... By 7 months she was pretty much just eating what we eat, within her ability to chew/swallow of course. Just no honey till 12 mo!

BLF (baby lead feeding) or is it BLW (weaning).

Tell me about it? I've heard of it.

Isn't it just letting your baby feed themselves instead of spoon feeding them? You start with soft foods. Do you skip purees?

When did you start?

Then tell me about your experience.
